Careers in Medicine

A Career Planning Program for Medical Students:

One of the most significant decisions students make while attending medical school is choosing a specialty. The UW Careers in Medicine program is designed to help students stay on track making this decision during the four years of medical school with a four-step program of self-assessment and career exploration. The goal of the program is to help each student narrow their choices and select a specialty focus by the end of spring quarter of 3rd year and be prepared to begin the application to residency, interview, and enjoy a successful Match to the career of their choosing.

Careers in Medicine - UW School of Medicine website:

The UW's Careers in Medicine website is organized to take students step by step, through each year of medical school, highlighting the activities that will be most beneficial in terms of career decision-making.  It's designed to use in tandem with the AAMC Careers in Medicine® (CiM) site, which provides general career advising information for medical students. CiM links are posted in the upper right box on each page to facilitate access.

Our objective is to provide our medical students with the information, resources, and experiences necessary to make good career decisions and to be successful in the residency match.

As each student explores the career options and narrows down their specialty choice, there is ongoing guidance and support from the Office of Career Advising, from the Dean of Student Affairs, from your college faculty, and from the departmental career counselors in each specialty area.

The Careers in Medicine program is a four-stage process of:

The UW School of Medicine has a long history of placing graduating medical students into residency training programs that match their career interests and needs. Our 2011 graduates had an outstanding year with a 99% Match rate.
