School Outreach Throughout the WWAMI Region

What are bones made of?

Calcium and phosphate...So drink lots of milk! This question and its answer were only a taste of what a group of five 4th year medical students heard while visiting 5th and 6th graders in Boise. It was an exciting two days that was organized through the University of Washington chapter of AOA in an attempt to garner interest in the human body.  When it came to "dissecting" a human anatomy model, these kids were excited and adept. They gobbled up the knowledge as we explained heart attacks, emphysema, cirrhosis, diabetes, and kidney stones. Hearing breath sounds and the "lub-dub" led to some stethoscope antics, as one may imagine, but the kids loved it. Who wants to be a doctor, nurse, or work in a hospital when they grow up? We saw lots of hands. That's excellent...study hard!

The Boise school visits were just part of a school outreach program conducted by AOA members throughout this year. From Anchorage to Tacoma and throughout the WWAMI region, AOA members made presentations to both high school and grade school students. Hopefully we met many future healthcare professionals!

"Pearls" for 1st and 2nd Year Students

Pearls

is a new project created by the 2011-2012 AOA members.
In its most literal definition, a pearl is 'a smooth lustrous deposit found in certain mollusks, valued as a gem'.  We often hear of 'pearls' in medicine; these are not in reference to ocean treasures but to short, to-the-point, high 'bang for the buck' bits of advice that help emphasize the key point of the topic or question at hand.  An annual question of particular interest to the freshperson and sophomore medical students is 'how do I succeed in years 1 and 2?'.  While there are as many answers as there are learning styles, the recently elected AOA members took some time to reflect on what worked well for us and have collected 23 Pearls to share.

Elective Fair and Book Sale

The AOA-sponsored elective fair is held annually in January

Emily Olsen ready to advise at the Surgery Clerkship Table

gave students the opportunity to discuss 3rd and 4th year electives, as well as the process of applying to different areas of medicine.  In addition, students who attended were able to buy textbooks and board review books at a reduced price from senior students. A portion of the book sale proceeds will be donated.

The Turkey Book

This year, the AOA members

have created a digital version of the Turkey Book which is a popular pocket guide to the 3rd and required 4th year clerkships. The Turkey Book is also sold to UW medical students at the end of the 2nd year as they transition to the clinical phase of training. It includes key information and quick reference information, such as commonly used formulas and answers to common “pimp” topics. Sales will begin in the Spring when 3rd year schedules are released.
