Overview
The Medical Student Poster Session will be Thursday, November 17, 2011 at UW Tower from 5:00 - 7:00 PM. While your posters will be set up for you, you will be expected to assist with break down. Please plan on on arriving by 4:45 PM that afternoon.
As such, your poster will be due at UW Posters in the Locke Computer Center (T-271 HSB) for proofing and printing no later than Friday, October 28, 2011. They will be expecting you. After your poster has been printed, please plan to drop it off to Michelle Fleming's attention in A-300, no later than Thursday, November 10. See "Poster Printing" below for more details.
Poster Design
Your poster should be prepared using PowerPoint or another similar tool. Of course, some of you may never have produced a poster before! UW Posters has a terrific web site that gives instructions and design help. Click on “Help,” then choose “Design Help.” See especially “How to Make a Poster Using PowerPoint.” Be certain to set the poster file dimensions at the very beginning for the final dimensions of the poster 36" x 24" (W X H). Please also read “Essential Steps for the Best Print” on the “File Upload” page. The FAQ has additional helpful information.
Poster Content
Your poster should include a short introduction and background to your study, the study design and methods used, the results, a brief discussion of the significance of your findings, and a summary/conclusion. Of course, don't forget to include the title of the project, your name, your sponsor's name, and the department. Your sponsor should also be able to advise you on these matters.
Here two poster templates (MS Power Point), which you may save and edit. Template 1 is the simplest format - it includes a description of what to include in each section. Template 2 is a more complex format that describes a hypothetical study - the overlapping text boxes can be a bit frustrating to manipulate but some people find the format more visually appealing. Use of these templates is optional, and they are only a starting point. Adjust text box size and colors as needed to accommodate your needs and creativity.
Poster Printing
The Dean's office will cover the expense of printing your poster plus one contract proof at UW Posters (T-271), but cannot cover printing costs at any other location. As mentioned above, you will need to submit your poster for proofing and printing prior to Friday, October 28, 2011. This is an absolute deadline and requests for extensions will not be granted.
1) Go to: www.uwposters.com
2) Select the purple button: “Order or Revise”
3) Select the middle green button: “Start NEW Group Order”
4) Select your group: MSRTP
5) Input your group’s access code: msrtp
6) Input your information and continue to upload your file and complete your order. Be sure to note that you would like to see one proof. You will get an automatic email confirmation with a work order number and confirmation code. You will need to keep this information so you can access your order in case of any revisions.
The UW Poster staff will know automatically that, as an MSRTP student, your poster should be 36" x 24" semi-gloss, and that the school will cover the cost of one contract proof. The proof will be on the same type of paper as your poster, and the colors will look exactly like the real thing. Any additional proofs beyond the first will need to be paid for by you.
Be sure to leave time to make any adjustments needed after seeing your proof! Once you give approval to print the poster the poster may take several days to produce, particularly when demand is high.
Again, your poster will be due at UW Posters no later than Friday, October 28, 2011, and after your poster has been printed, please drop it off to Michelle Fleming’s attention at the A-300 front desk, no later than 5:00 PM Thursday, November 10.
If technical questions arise in the production of your posters, please contact UW Posters client services staff at 206.543.9275 or uwposter@uw.edu.
