The medical school requires that, before the start of classes, you complete an AHA-approved course in CPR/BLS for Healthcare Providers (also known as Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers) and submit a signed copy (front and back) of your certification card. Please note that the Healthcare Provider level of training is required. You can find a class in your area by visiting the
American Heart Association website or the
American Red Cross.
One organization in Seattle that frequently trains our students is the
Cascade Training Center. To receive the UW SOM discounted rate through Cascade, use the code "UWSOM12". You will need to register by PHONE to receive the discount.
In accordance with compliance policy on page 32 of the
Student Handbook, CPR/BLS certifications must be renewed every two years and must be renewed prior to the six week block in which they expire. For example, if your card expires at the end of February, and Spring A begins on February 13, your card will need to be renewed prior to February 13.
To check when your CPR/BLS card expires, please email
SOMcompl@uw.edu.
Incoming First Year Students
BLS/CPR certifications must be renewed every two years. Please complete the training between June-August 2011 so that your card is dated between June 1, 2011 and August 27, 2011. The reason for this is that you will be required to recertify during Capstone at the end of your second year.
Note:
Please note: ACLS, PALS, NRP, EMT, or other certifications do not substitute for Healthcare Provider level CPR/BLS certification.
Upon completion of training, please email a copy of your signed certification card (front & back) to
SOMcompl@uw.edu or send via U.S. Mail to:
UW School of Medicine
Compliance
1959 NE Pacific St. Suite A300 HSC

Seattle, WA 98195
Please store your original CPR/BLS card in a safe place. You must keep your certification current throughout your 4 years in medical school. You will be required to renew through the SOM at the end of your second year.
