Residency Application

Below you will find links to basic information needed to gain an understanding of the residency selection and application process, to begin to assess the competitiveness of programs, and to refer to when you begin the interview process.

The process of identifying your career direction and selecting appropriate residencies will involve a considerable amount of time and effort on your part.  You are encouraged to seek advice from all of the resources available to you through your College mentor, the department career counselor assignments, experiences and discussions while on clerkships with residents and faculty, and individual advising through our Counseling Services and with Dr. Pete Eveland, Associate Dean for Student Affairs.

This is both an exciting and challenging time in your medical school training.  We trust that this information will be helpful as you move through the residency selection and application process.

The Interview Process

  • HOST Program (Help Our Students Travel) The HOST program, is offered by the UW Medicine Alumni Association.  This program has helped hundreds of UW’s fourth-year medical students find a friendly home while traveling for their residency interviews. Alumni are asked to provide students with a free place to stay for one or more nights.

Matching Process

  • NRMP The National Resident Matching Program  provides an impartial venue for matching applicants' preferences for residency positions with program directors' preferences for applicants. Each year approximately 16,000 U.S. allopathic medical school seniors and 15,000 graduates of osteopathic, Canadian or foreign medical schools compete for approximately 24,000 residency positions.
  • SF Match  This application and matching program handles Child Neurology, Neurotology, Ophthalmology, and Plastic Surgery residency positions.
  • Urology Match  This matching program handles only Urology programs.
