2012-2013 Information
FAFSA
The University of Washington FAFSA priority deadline is February 28th, 2012. The financial aid priority deadline applies regardless of admission status. Late applicants are considered for Direct Stafford unsubsidized loans and graduate plus (GPlus) loans. Students applying for the SOM scholarship are required to provide parental information on their FAFSA regardless of age, marital status or independent status. Providing parental information will not effect eligibility for your standard loan package (Title IV aid or institutional grant aid). Parental information may also be required to determine eligibility for Primary Care Loans, Loan for Disadvantaged Students and Scholarship for Disadvantaged Students.
University of Washington School Code: 003798.
Students may apply online at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/.
School of Medicine Scholarship
The School of Medicine scholarship application will be available online in February for 2012-2013. The deadline will be May 31, 2012. You must include parental information when you submit your FAFSA if you are applying for this scholarship.
Outside Scholarship Opportunities
We periodically send out e-mails to admitted or prospective students about outside scholarship opportunities. Any outside scholarships you receive must be reported to the SOM Financial Aid Office.
Direct Stafford Loans
The University of Washington participates in the Federal Direct Stafford Loan Program. Information about the Direct Loan program can be found at the Department of Education Direct Loan Website. You can also find some excellent resources on our Loan and Debt Management page.
Non-Resident Tuition (Non-WWAMI)
Out of region students (those who are not in one of the WWAMI states, Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, or Idaho) may apply for residency status in Washington State after demonstrating a year of primary residency in Washington State. If Residency status is not granted, students will continue to pay Non-Resident Tuition.
Money Management Resources
AAMC - FIRST
The American Association of Medical Colleges has a great resource for prospective, current and graduated medical students regarding financial aid, debt management, budgeting and financial literacy. You can find this resource at their AAMC - FIRST website. This website comes highly recommended by the School of Medicine Financial Aid staff.
Regional WWAMI Students
Notes on Financial Aid
Regional WWAMI students receive their financial aid loans and other financial aid from the University of Washington, even if they are physically located at one of the regional WWAMI locations. Make sure to list the University of Washington on your FAFSA. Regional WWAMI students pay tuition directly to their WWAMI school.
NHSC, Military HPSP and IHS Scholarships
Students attending one of our 1st year regional sites (UID, WSU-Spokane, WSU-Pullman, MSU) must arrange to use their NHSC, Military HPSP and IHS scholarships directly at the first year site. Please make sure to still report the money to the UW School of Medicine Financial Aid office.
Alaska and Wyoming students may not be able to utilize these scholarships due to conflicting service requirements with their sponsoring states.
Short-term Loans
All WWAMI regional sites run on a semester system. However, since WWAMI students receive aid from the University of Washington, aid is disbursed in 3 installments based on our quarter system. Essentially, WWAMI students will have two tuition payments, but receive their aid from the UW in thirds.
To assist with monetary needs, short-term loans are available for students at regional sites who receive full financial aid. These loans are intended to be used to assist with the first tuition payment, and must be paid back by April 15th (a few weeks after your aid disburses for Spring quarter). The amounts of short-term loan availability are based on site:
- UAA, WSU, UID, Spokane: $10,000
- MSU: $7500
- UWY: $5000
More information will be provided to students attending a regional site in early June. Completing a short-term loan can be time-sensitive and requires a quick turn-around. If you are a regional WWAMI student and will be traveling or unreachable via mail or e-mail, you may want to contact us so we are aware of the situation.
