2010 Premat Brochure
A Summer Program for
Students Transitioning Into Medical School
Each summer, the Office of Multicultural Affairs sponsors a Prematriculation Program (PreMat) for entering medical students from educationally or financially disadvantaged backgrounds. The goal of the program is to facilitate students’ transition to medical school by providing academic and social support. PreMat is especially helpful to students who have been away from an intensive academic program, because it provides a preview of the medical school environment and curriculum. The major course of study during the program is Histology. Students receive intensive histology instruction for five weeks and take a challenge exam at the end of the five weeks. Students who pass will receive credit for HuBio 510 (Histology) in the fall.
Program Activities & Schedule
Histology lectures are held daily in the morning; a lab with organized review and tutorial sessions are held Tuesday and Thursday in the early afternoon. Other activities include: sessions on study and test-taking skills, stress management; health disparities, and service learning; and meetings with medical school deans, counselors curriculum managers, and current medical students. There are occasional evening and weekend meetings.
Cost & Housing
There are no tuition costs to participate in the Prematriculation program. PreMat participants are responsible for required texts and their room and board while in Seattle.
Faculty
Histology instruction is given by faculty from the UW Departments of Biological Structure and Physiology. Second-year medical and dental students serve as teaching assistants and facilitate the lab and tutorial sessions.
Mentoring
As mentioned above, there are no tuition costs for participating in this program. In exchange, we expect that PreMat students will help mentor the high school and college students in our other summer programs (UDOC and SMDEP). A session on how to be a good mentor will be provided. Dr. David Acosta mentors the PreMat participants during the program; one-on-one meetings with him are scheduled.
Eligibility
Medical students who have been accepted to the University of Washington School of Medicine who come from economically and/or educationally disadvantaged backgrounds, or who have spent a significant time away from academic study, are encouraged to apply.
To Apply
Submit a letter of application stating: 1) why you are interested in the program, 2) how you would benefit from participating, 3) what you feel you can contribute to your peers in the program, and 4) describe the qualities of a good mentor and how you can contribute as a good mentor to high school and college students. Address and mail your letter to: David Acosta, MD, UW Office of Multicultural Affaires, Box 357430, Seattle, WA 98195.
Program Dates
The 2011 Prematriculation Program will be held from June 20th through July 22nd, 2011. Sessions will be held at the University of Washington Magnusson Health Sciences Center in Seattle. Attendance is required at all sessions. Participants should expect to spend six or more hours a day in sessions. We highly discourage students from being involved in employment or other outside activities during the five weeks of the program.
