Block Calendar:
Your clerkship dates must correspond with our Clinical Elective Schedule. You must start at the beginning of the block(s) and finish at the end of the block(s).

To Apply:

  1. Please contact the Clerkship Coordinator for availability.
  2. Applications must be received at least 6 weeks prior to the start of the requested clerkship date.
  3. You must meet all eligibility requirements of the Visiting Student Clinical Elective Program.
  4. Complete the VSAS application and upload all supplemental materials to VSAS. No action will be taken on your application until it is complete. Departments may not "pre-enroll" or hold spaces for potential visiting students, regardless of their intent or qualifications.

Cancelations:
You must withdraw at least 6 weeks before your starting date. Fees are non-refundable. All cancelations and changes must be made in writing to the Clerkship Coordinator.


 

Course # MED EM 681 – Harborview Medical Center ER Clerkship for Visiting Students

Offered A, W, Sp, S – 4 Weeks, 8 credits
Instructor:  Drs. Jamie Shandro and Richard Utarnachitt, HMC Clerkship Co-Director
Prerequisites:  Third year core clerkships in Surgery, Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, Psychiatry, and Ob/Gyn & fourth year medical student standing

Students work at the level of sub-interns and directly under the supervision of an emergency medicine attending. Harborview Medical Center serves as the sole Level 1 Trauma Center in the WWAMI region (Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana and Idaho). It also serves as the King County hospital and the portal through which 30 % of all hospital charity care in the State of Washington is accessed. Students serve as integral members of both the trauma team as well as the acute care medical team in the emergency department. They will gain experience in the management of a wide variety of patients. This includes high acuity critically ill patients as well as the lower acuity ambulatory patients that present to any busy emergency department. Their clinical experience is further augmented with directed readings, didactic sessions and skills labs.

Course # MED EM 682 – UW Medical Center ER Clerkship for Visiting Students

Offered A, W, Sp, S – 4 Weeks, 8 credits
Instructor: Jared Strote, MD, UWMC Clerkship Director
Prerequisites:  Third year core clerkships in Surgery, Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, Psychiatry, and Ob/Gyn & fourth year medical student standing

Students work at the level of sub-interns directly with the emergency medicine attending. The University of Washington Medical Center is the WWAMI referral center for particularly complex oncology, surgery, transplant, vascular, cardiac, and pulmonary patients. A wide variety of patient presentations are encountered, including these patients unique to an academic tertiary care center. Students work as integral members of the emergency department team, managing multiple acutely ill patients simultaneously. Their clinical experience is further augmented with directed readings, didactic sessions and skills labs.
