Overview
Your poster will be due at the Locke Computer Center for proofing and printing by late October 2008. (See MSRTP Important Dates.) They will be expecting you. When your poster has been printed, please plan to drop it off to Marcie Buckner's attention in A-300, no later than Thursday, November 13 (two days before the poster session). For details, see "Poster Printing" below.
The Medical Student Poster Session is scheduled for Monday, November 17, 2008, at 5:00 p.m. Because you will be in class until 4:20 the day of the session, your posters will be taken to the HUB and posted for you early that afternoon.
Poster Design
Your poster should be prepared using PowerPoint or another similar tool. Of course, some of you may never have produced a poster before! There is a terrific web site that gives instructions and design help. It is http://depts.washington.edu/hsasf/posters/designhelp.html. See especially “How to Make a Poster Using PowerPoint.”
Poster Content
Your poster should include a short introduction and background to your study, the study design and methods used, the results, a brief discussion of the significance of your findings, and a summary/conclusion. Of course, don't forget to include the title of the project, your name, your sponsor's name, and the department. Your sponsor should also be able to advise you on these matters.
Poster Printing
The Dean's office will cover the expense of printing your poster plus one contact proof at the Locke Computer Center (T-271), but cannot cover printing costs at any other location. As mentioned above, you will need to submit your poster for proofing and printing by late October 2008.
A list of MSRTP students' names will be given to the staff at the Locke. Please be sure to announce up front that you are an MSRTP student when you submit your file. That is essential. There is an order form that you will be asked to fill out, whether you submit the file electronically or in person. On the form, it will ask for a box number. That should be Box 356340 (which is for Academic Affairs). To submit electronically, go to the Locke web site: http://depts.washington.edu/hsasf/posters/index.html.
On the online form, where it asks for budget number, please type "MSRTP." Nothing is needed for budget name
If you submit the poster in person, please bring it on a CD with ONLY the poster file on it.
The Locke will know automatically that, as an MSRTP student, your poster should be 30" x 40" semi-gloss, and that the school will cover the cost of one contract proof. The proof will be on the same type of paper as your poster, and the colors will look exactly like the real thing. (What you see on your computer screen may actually look quite different when printed.) Any additional contact proofs beyond the first will involve a cost to you of around $8.00 per proof and can be paid by Visa/MC or check.
Be sure to leave time to make any adjustments needed after seeing your proof!
Once you have approved your poster, you will then submit your print request at the poster shop front counter. The poster may take up to several days to produce after you have approved it, particularly when demand is high (as it is prior to the poster session, at which ~120 students will be presenting posters).
If technical questions arise in the production of your posters, please refer to the contact persons at the Locke listed at http://depts.washington.edu/hsasf/posters/index.html.
