Graduate Medical Education Committee (GMEC)
The Graduate Medical Education Committee (GMEC) is chaired by the Designated Institutional Official (DIO) and is composed of GME administrators, program directors and other faculty, residents and fellows. The GMEC is responsible for monitoring and advising on all aspects of residency and fellowship education, including the establishment and implementation of policies and procedures regarding the quality of education, work environment, duty hours, supervision, general competencies, stipends, benefits, etc. The GMEC is also responsible for conducting internal reviews of all programs to assess compliance with the ACGME’s institutional and program requirements, and for monitoring action plans for the correction of concerns and areas of noncompliance found by the ACGME.
Six residents and/or fellows sit on the GMEC, including the Housestaff Association President, an appointed Chief Medicine Resident and four (4) peer-elected residents and/or fellows.
Institutional Resident/Fellow Advisory Committee (IRFAC)
The Institutional Resident/Fellow Advisory Committee (IRFAC) is a subcommittee of GMEC and is composed of residents, fellows and faculty. The IRFAC is responsible for the development of policies relevant to resident and fellow appointment and education, including stipend, fringe benefits, working conditions, supervision, weekend and holiday duty, grievance and termination procedures, quality of patient care, and the particulars of the Residency Position Appointment and Fellowship Position Appointment documents.
Resident Request Review Committee (RRRC)
The Resident Request Review Committee (RRRC) considers all requests for increases and/or changes in resident and fellowship complements and makes recommendations regarding such requests to the Dean. The committee will consider the following issues in its decision-making process:
-
Educational merit,
-
Regional and national workforce needs,
-
Accreditation requirements, and
-
Departmental track record in GME/fellowship (including, but not limited to, the clinical and educational resources available for education and the comparative quality of the educational program nationally and locally).
In many instances, the committee must also consider competing priorities for scarce resources and such requests will thus require additional assessment by hospital administration.
The RRRC consists of the Vice Dean for Graduate Medical Education, Assistant Dean for Graduate Medical Education, University of Washington Medical Center Medical Director, Harborview Medical Center Medical Director, Children’s Hospital and Regional Medical Center Medical Director, Director of Medical Affairs Financial Analysis and three department chairs.
