The University of Washington School of Medicine is committed to exemplary graduate medical education. As stated in the Mission Statement of the University School of Medicine: “we place special emphasis on education and training physicians, scientists, and allied health professionals dedicated to two distinct missions: meeting the health care needs of our region, particularly by recognizing the importance of primary care; advancing knowledge and assuming leadership in the biomedical sciences and in academic medicine.” Graduate Medical Education programs sponsored by the University of Washington School of Medicine are designed to produce skillful physicians with ingrained habits of life-long learning and well-formed ethical and professional modes of practice. The School of Medicine has a robust process of oversight through its Graduate Medical Education Committee to assure that the necessary educational, financial, and human resources to support GME are provided.
This commitment to graduate medical education is supported by the Dean of the School of Medicine (hereinafter referred to as “Dean/VPMA”), Department Chairs, Medical Directors of the participating institutions and the teaching staffs. The Dean/VPMA receives recommendations from the GMEC, chaired by the Associate Dean, regarding all matters pertaining to the oversight of GME within UW Medicine. The Dean/VPMA is directly responsible for decisions pertaining to GME and is in turn accountable to the UW Medicine Board, the President of the University of Washington and UW Board of Regents.
The overall responsibility for graduate medical education is delegated to the Vice Dean for Graduate Medical Education/Designated Institutional Official, who works in concert with the Dean, Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education, GME Administration, Department Chairs, Program Directors, the Graduate Medical Education Committee and the Institutional Resident/Fellow Advisory Committee.
