Cardiovascular Disease

OVERVIEW

The Fellowship Training Program in Cardiovascular Disease is designed to prepare fellows fo an academic career of excellence in cardiology research, teaching, and patient care.  Fellows must have completed an accredited three-year residency in internal medicine, possess outstanding clinical skills, and demonstrate prior research interest and experience.

Our Cardiology Fellowship is an ACGME accredited 3-year program consisting of two years of clinical training followed by a third year of research (80% time) and clinical electives (20% time).  We accept six fellows per year.  Either basic or clinical research options may be pursued.  Special areas of expertise of our fellowship program include vascular biology, echocardiography, electrophysiology, cardiac transplantation, new imaging procedures, bioengineering, health services, and clinical trials.

CLINICAL TRAINING

Clinical rotations are scheduled over a 24-month consecutive time block and include cardiac catheterization and angiography, echocardiography and adul congenital heart disease, coronary care units, nuclear cardiology, electrocardiography, electrophysiology, and device follow-up, heart failure and transplant cardiology, cardiology consult services and cardiac rehabilitation, and outpatient continuity clinics.

TEACHING CONFERENCES

Cardiology and grand rounds are weekly lectures on topics of current research and clinical interest.  Grand rounds are given in rotation by the cardiology faculty, visiting lecturers, and the cardiology fellows.  Weekly cardiology tutorials provide a comprehensive introduction to cardiovascular disease with emphasis on pathophysiology, pathology, pharmacology, diagnostic imaging techniques, and research methods.  Tutorial topics also include important aspects of cardiac surgery, pulmonary medicine and peripheral vascular disease.  The cardiac surgery and cardiology fellows also co-present a weekly collaborative conference between cardiology, cardiac anesthesia, and cardiac surgery that focuses on clinical patient management.

RESEARCH

First year fellows elect to focus on either basic, clinical, or population science and identify a research mentor and/or project on which they will work.  Second year fellows work with the mentor on research fellowship grants.  The third year is dedicated to the research project (80% time).  A fourth year of research training requires a special arrangement with the Program Director and is usually dependent on research funding.
