OVERVIEW
The University of Washington Family Medicine Residency Program is part of the highly respected University of Washington Affiliated Family Medicine Residency Network in the Northwest region (Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, and Idaho). Excellence in education and an emphasis on quality patient care are hallmarks of training at the University of Washington. Residents receive training in a variety of practice options, including rural practice, urban underserved practice and academic careers. Whether leading a medicine team at one of Seattle's major hospitals, or caring for patients at a community practice site in Alaska or Montana, residents are on the cutting edge of training in family medicine.
TRAINING
The residency program emphasizes evidence-based practice decisions and cost effective preventive care. Residents have the opportunity to care for patients from diverse cultural, social and economic backgrounds. Autonomy and responsibility in patient care are encouraged under the guidance of a faculty rich in diversity and depth. Strong ambulatory clinical training and access to extensive resources at the University and the Department of Family Medicine characterize this residency. For each resident in the program, inpatient training takes place at a variety of Seattle area hospitals, making use of the many educational resources of the community.
Eight residents are admitted each year. Residents train for full-service practice, including obstetrics and procedures, and also have the option of pursuing health policy, teaching, and research interests through our academic focus track. Behavioral science is also integrated to help patients share responsibility for managing chronic illnesses. In addition, residents have the opportunity to work towards MPH degrees or conduct research with family physician researchers.
