Gerontology and Geriatric Medicine

OVERVIEW

The primary goals of the fellowship are to provide interdisciplinary clinical training in geriatric medicine and to prepare physicians for an academic career and leadership role in gerontology. Clinical services encompass the spectrum of ambulatory, acute inpatient, subacute inpatient, nursing home, and home care. Participation in existing geriatric research is integral to the program. Fellows participate in the regular teaching activities of the Division, including: journal club, research seminars, and clinical conferences. Additionally, fellows gain teaching experience through teaching in courses for medical students at all levels of the undergraduate curriculum, and supervision of housestaff. The fellowship, which is ACGME accredited, consists of two- and three-year programs. The fellowship is an integrated experience based at several sites, including a veteran’s hospital.

FELLOWSHIP TRAINING

There are diverse research opportunities available to fellows. The emphasis is on several areas of research relevant to geriatrics: molecular genetics of neurodegenerative diseases; neuropeptide regulation of endocrine and behavioral function; reproductive hormones in aging males; endocrine aspects of energy metabolism and weight regulation; cancer in aging; basic mechanisms of wound healing and angiogenesis in aging; and a broad-based program in health services research and clinical epidemiology including evaluation of long-term care, medical ethics, sensory deficits, falls, dementia, and health promotion.

The University of Washington Schools of Medicine and Public Health have set up special training courses for research fellows. These include formal course work in biostatistics, clinical epidemiology, study design, and, for laboratory research oriented fellows, molecular and cell biology. These courses are intended to strengthen the knowledge base of fellows as they begin their research careers.
