OVERVIEW
The Residency Training Program in Obstetrics and Gynecology is a fully approved, integrated, four-year program fulfilling the requirements for board certification in this specialty. It is structured so that residents assume increasing responsibility as they progress through the program with specified objectives to be achieved on each rotation. Inpatient and outpatient facilities at the University of Washington Medical Center, Harborview Medical Center, Virginia Mason Medical Center, and Swedish Hospital Medical Center are utilized for residency training. Six positions are available each year. Applicants may be accepted into the program after either graduation from medical school or following completion of R-1 training.
RESIDENCY TRAINING
In addition to a broad clinical experience in obstetrics and gynecology, residents receive training in perinatology, oncology, ultrasonography, sexually transmitted diseases, reproductive endocrinology, infertility, gynecologic pathology, breast disease, family planning, urodynamics, care of the newborn, pediatric gynecology and obstetrical anesthesia. An elective rotation is available in the third year that allows residents to obtain additional training in areas of special interest (e.g., general surgery, urology, anesthesia, pathology, endocrinology, perinatal biology, research, specialty clinics).
The training program promotes continuity of patient care, and residents are responsible for the care of selected patients over an extended period of time. Residents receive in-depth training in primary care at the Women’s Health Care Center and Harborview Medical Center. The Public Health Service has selected the Women’s Health Care Center as a Center of Excellence.
All residents are required to conduct a research project. This will be presented during the fourth year at the Resident’s Research Conference.
CONFERENCE & TEACHING ROUNDS
Weekly scheduled conferences are held at the University and affiliated hospitals for resident and postgraduate training. Wednesday morning Grand Rounds (see our online calendar) cover new developments in our field and other disciplines that are important to OB/GYN. In addition, teaching rounds are conducted daily with the attending physicians on the respective services. A monthly journal club focuses on current publications in Obstetrics and Gynecology. These activities provide excellent opportunities for supervision and teaching of the resident staff by the faculty.
Through conferences, lectures, demonstrations, and supervision of patient care, residents actively participate in the teaching program of third and fourth year medical students during their clerkship in Obstetrics and Gynecology.
POSTDOCTORAL TRAINING
Postresidency clinical and research fellowships are available on a competitive basis in three subspecialty areas: reproductive endocrinology and infertility, maternal-fetal medicine, and infectious diseases. There is also a fellowship in female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery. The fellowships are designed to provide trainees with an in-depth experience in these subspecialty areas in preparation for academic careers in Obstetrics and Gynecology.
The department was chosen by the National Institutes of Health to be a Women’s Reproductive Health Research Career Development Center. Selected Scholars are trained to become independent investigators.
