Sports Medicine

OVERVIEW

Established in 1996, the University of Washington Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship is an ACGME accredited program which provides comprehensive training and experience in sports medicine. It is sponsored jointly by the Department of Family Medicine and Hall Health Primary Care Center, the University of Washington student health service.

Strengths of the program include five core primary care faculty members with a certificate of added qualification in sports medicine, a world class academic medical center, a top-ranked Family Medicine Department and top tier NCAA Division I sports program. Primary faculty include Dr. Kimberly Harmon [Director], Dr. Michael Eshleman, Dr. Jonathan Drezner, Dr. Monique Burton, and Dr. John O'Kane.

TRAINING

The clinical experience is designed to develop expertise in a wide range of medical and musculoskeletal problems in all age ranges. There are longitudinal clinical experiences as well as specialty rotations.

Specialty rotations include sports, shoulder, foot and ankle, hand, joint and pediatric orthopaedics. Fellows also rotate through a nationally prominent sports and spine physiatry group, an excellent rheumatology rotation and have a comprehensive musculoskeletal radiology experience. In addition, fellows gain exposure to exercise physiology, exercise stress testing and pulmonary physiology in both healthy and disease states.

The fellow will gain team physician experience as the doctor for a local high school as well as experience with the University of Washington hockey team (club) and varsity athletic teams. The fellow will have two family medicine continuity clinics a week at the family practice residency site and two sports continuity clinics at the University of Washington student health center.

Academic research is encouraged and expected. Educational experiences are supported with a strong didactic series and journal club. The fellow is also encouraged to present at and be active in national sports medicine organizations.

The University of Washington Primary Sports Medicine Fellowship is ideal for dynamic, bright, energetic applicants with a desire to develop strong clinical and research skills who will make an impact on the evolving field of sports medicine.
The fellowship can only accept applications from the discipline of Family Medicine.
