K-12 and College

Fausto & DeLancy Middle School Program

A part of the Office of Multicultural Affairs, this program's purpose is to extend the scope of programs that recruit youths residing on Native American Reservations into health fields.  The program is focused on middle school students.  This initiative is meant to augment the UW School of Medicine's strengths in attracting disadvantaged populations into the health professions.

NIH/NIDDK/DREW National High School Student Summer Research Apprentice Program

This program is designed to provide students with an opportunity to work in a biomedical laboratory in their state.  Each student is paired with an established researcher and assigned to a research team.  Students will work with staff on a specific biomedical research project.  The 8-10 week program provides students with real experiences actively involved in a project and laboratory and research protocols.  In the last week the students will travel to Washington, D.C. to present their research. Visit the NIDDK-Charles Drew University of Medicine and Sciences National High School Student Summer Research Program Web site.

Summer Medical and Dental Education Program (SMDEP)

This program annually brings talented underrepresented undergraduate students to the University of Washington campus for six weeks of exposure to the field of medicine or dentistry via observation experiences, lectures, site visits, mentoring, and research and MCAT/DAT preparation and test taking strategies.  For more information, go to the SMDEP page in the Office of Multicultural Affairs.

U-DOC Summer Enrichment Programs

These summer enrichment programs are sponsored by the UW School of Medicine’s Office of Multicultural Affairs and affiliated state universities. The program's goal is to foster, affirm and encourage the interest of high school students living in medically underserved areas in health professions by allowing them to explore health care careers. The program is currently offered in Anchorage and Seattle.

Rural/Underserved Observation Experience (R/UOE)

Once students are admitted to the medical school, they receive an offer to participate in our Rural/Underserved Observation Experience(R/UOE) program.  We work with interested students to find one-day shadowing experiences with physicians who work in rural and/or underserved settings.  Our partner Area Health Education Centers (AHEC) in the WWAMI region find the placements. For more information about this opportunity contact Peter House at 206.616.4985 or e-mail phinney6@u.washington.edu.
