Rehabilitation Medicine evaluates and provides non-surgical and post-operative treatment of musculoskeletal and neurological injuries, including spine, brain, shoulder and knee injuries and pain management. Rehabilitation professionals are available and work with many patients early on in the acute hospital setting, even while the patient is focusing on their earliest, and most difficult, medical recovery.
Harborview Medical Center’s inpatient rehabilitation unit utilizes a comprehensive multidisciplinary approach to treating individuals with disabling injuries, incorporating the expertise of multiple medical and ancillary disciplines including physiatrists, rehabilitation nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech pathologists, vocational rehabilitation counselors, therapeutic recreation specialists, social workers, and rehabilitation psychologists to enhance patients’ function and improve quality of life. The unit’s goal is to guide, educate and support patients as they return to maximal independence in their life activities, including daily living, mobility, work, and recreation.

After patients leave the hospital, another team of rehab professionals continues this patient-focused work in the Comprehensive Outpatient Rehabilitation Program (CORP). In this clinic, physiatrists and rehabilitation professionals work side by side as a multidisciplinary team, providing patient centered services to guide the patient back to a life of maximum function. Rehabilitation Medicine also provides expertise in electrodiagnostic testing, neuropsychological testing and state of the art therapies and assistive technology.
