Stroke Prevention

SPS3 (Secondary Prevention of Small Subcortical Strokes): Testing different levels of blood pressure control and a combination of blood thinners (clopidogrel + aspirin) vs. aspirin alone in the prevention of recurrent strokes after a small subcortical stroke. NIH funded.

RESPECT (PFO Closure vs.Standard of Care Treatment): Testing Closure of the PFO (small congenital hole in the heart) with the AMPLATZER® PFO Occluder vs. blood thinners (antiplatelet or anticoagulant) in patients aged 18-60 without other clear cause of stroke besides the PFO. Industry funded (Amplatzer Corp).

Acute Ischemic Stroke

CASIS (CNS Antigen Sensitization in Stroke): Evaluating the immune response following ischemic stroke. Interested in learning whether or not infection in the immediate post-stroke period increases the likelihood of developing an autoimmune response to the brain. Looking at markers of antigen non-specific inflammation as well as antigen specific immune responses to the brain. Subjects enrolled within 72 hours of stroke and are followed for one year. NIH funded.
