Harborview's Norm Maleng Building to open this summer
The Norm Maleng Building is part of the $193 million bond measure approved by King County voters in 2000 to add bed capacity, expand the Emergency Department, and meet new seismic standards.
The building is named in honor of Norm Maleng, who served six terms as King County Prosecutor. In 1989, his young daughter, Karen, received care at Harborview for injuries suffered during a sledding accident. Following her death, Maleng and his wife Judy became tireless community ambassadors for Harborview. A memorial art piece is planned for the lobby.
The Norm Maleng Building has eight operating rooms, 50 additional inpatient beds, and new acute care, rehabilitation and clinic facilities. A six-story bridge building across Ninth Avenue offers patients and visitors comfortable waiting rooms with spectacular views of Mount Rainier.
In May 2008, Construction Communications announced that the Maleng Building has been nominated for a Building of America Award. It will be featured in the 2009 Real Estate & Construction Review - Northwest Edition as an example of a building project that makes a difference in the community.
