What are your time commitments? The minimum time commitment is 4 hours a week for 6 months. You must be able to commit to coming in on a weekly basis ata scheduled time.
How old must you be? The minimum age is 14 years of age.
What is the process for becoming a volunteer? Once your completed volunteer application is received we will process your criminal background check and review your application. Once we have determined we have an opening in your area of interest we will call you to schedule an interview. At the interview we will discuss your goals, abilities, and experience to determine we have a placement that will be a good fit for you. If we have an appropriate placement for you we will schedule you for an orientation.
Where should I park when I come for my interview? Park in the
View Park Parking Garage on the west side of the hospital. We will be able to validate your parking ticket for you. There are also many
Metro busses that stop at Harborview Medical Center and the
Health Sciences Express bus from the University of Washington is very convenient.
How long does it take to become a volunteer? On average, it will take 4 to 6 weeks to complete the process and be ready to volunteer.
How long will the interview take? The interview will take approximately 15-20 minutes.
Is there a dress code? Yes, we ask that our volunteers assume a business casual/professional dress code, or pink volunteer scrubs if applicable. Volunteers are not allowed to wear blue jeans, sweatpants, sweatshirts, open-toe shoes, t-shirts or shorts.
Can I volunteer just for the summer? Yes. Summer Teen Volunteers must commit to a minimum of 8 hours a week for 6 weeks. A volunteer application is due by May 5th to be considered for this program. Limited volunteer opportunities are available for college students from out of town.
Will I be able to shadow a doctor? No. Physician observation experiences are not offered.
Do you have research positions available? Yes, we have limited research positions available.
If I volunteer will I get a job at the hospital? Volunteering at the hospital does not guarantee employment at Harborview.
How long do you keep applications? Applications are held for three months only. If you do not complete the process within three months your application will be archived (unless otherwise approved by Volunteer Services).
I’ve attended orientation – what’s next? Make sure to turn in the results of your TB test along with all of your orientation materials. Once all of the necessary paperwork is complete and turned in, you are ready to be assigned a department and schedule.
May I continue volunteering beyond my 6 month commitment? Of course! You will be kept on the Volunteer Schedule until you resign. In order to continue volunteering you must update your TB Screening and paperwork every year by the date of your original Volunteer Orientation.
