December, 2007

American Association of Critical Care Nurses
The Burn Intensive Car Unit (BICU) received the Beacon Award from the American Association of Critical Care Nurses. This prestigious award recognizes the nation's top hospital critical care units.

March of Dimes
Nicole Kupchik, received honorable mention in the category of “Research / Advancing the Profession” at the March of Dimes Distinguished Nurse of the Year awards.

November, 2007

Washington State Pharmacy Association
Cindi Brennan, Assistant Director of Ambulatory Pharmacy Services, received the 2007 Pfizer Health-System Pharmacist of the year Award.

Association of Marketing & Communication Professionals
Harborview’s Community Relations department received four awards in the 2007 MarCom Creative Awards competition.

  • Platinum award in the media relations category for a story in The Seattle P-I describing a pioneering surgery performed by Dr. Doug Smith that would allow a patient to control a prosthetic hand with his brain following an amputation.
  • Gold award for Harborview's Art Program Web site
  • Harborview received a Gold Award for its TeleConsult Neurosurgery brochure for referring physicians
  • Honorable Mention for a story on KING-TV Evening Magazine about patient Chandler Balkman.

Seattle King County Regional Healthcare Coalition
Chris Martin, Harborview's Director of Emergency Services, was one of seven hospital emergency services leaders awarded an "Excellence in Collaboration" honor. The award acknowledges those who have been meeting to provide strategic direction to the broader Region 6 Hospital Emergency Preparedness Committee and Healthcare Coalition staff.


October, 2007

The Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM)
Harborview received the 2008 Family-Centered Care Award for its implementation of Patient and Family Centered Care initiatives in the ICU.

Washington State Hospital Assocation (WSHA)
Harborview Medical Center was designated as one of the “Best Hospitals” for the Infection Control Hand Hygiene Initiative by the Washington State Hospital Association (WSHA). The recognition is titled the “Best Hands-On Care.”

National Academy of Sciences

Dr. Frederick Rivara, of the Harborview Injury Prevention and Research Center, was recently appointed to the National Academy of Sciences' Board on Children, Youth and Families

American Association for the Surgery of Trauma
Dr. Jerry Jurkovich, chief of Trauma Services at Harborview, was named president-elect. He will serve as president of the organization in 2008-2009


September, 2007

Seattle Magazine
Seattle Magazine's "Best Doctors" issue recognized 11 UW physicians based at Harborview, representing 13 specialties.

K.G. Hospital, Tamil Nadu, India
Dr. Laligam Sekhar, Harborview Neurosurgeon, received "Person of the Decade" award from K.G.Hospital and foundation, a hospital located in the state of Tamil Nadu, India.

Seattle Neighborhood Group
Tita Begashaw, Admitting, was awarded the "Community Builder 2007" East African Outreach Project Award for her many years volunteering in the African communities of Seattle


August, 2007 

University HealthSystem Consortium (UHS)
Harborview was selected as the only “Best Performer” in a national benchmarking project on palliative care sponsored by the University HealthSystem Consortium (UHC). The project involved 44 hospitals and was designed to identify best practices in caring for patients with terminal illness.

Ladies' Home Journal
Dr. Constance D. Lehman, director of breast imaging at UW School of Medicine and Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, was the recipient of the Ladies' Home  Journal's second annual Health Breakthrough Award.

American Heart Association
Harborview was named Corporate Sponsor for the Heart Ball 2007


July, 2007

National Association of Public Hospitals and Health Systems
Harborview was selected as the 2007 NAPH Safety Net Award Winner in the category of Patient Centered Care for the ICU Liaison Program

National Association of Public Hospitals and Health Systems
Harborview received an Honorable Mention in the category of Patient Safety for the "Critical Care is a Process Not a Location (Beyond Rapid Response)."

NurseWeek

Carolyn Blayney, nurse manager of the Burn and Pediatric ICUs, received the national NurseWeek Award for Excellence for Community Service. Blayney helped care for burn victims after the collapse of the World Trade Center in 2001 and was deployed to set up field hospitals and clinics in the aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. 

June, 2007

Washington State Dietetic Association
2007 Award of Excellence for Clinical Practice/Research presented to Katie Farver, director of clinical nutrition services. The award recognizes research and teaching contributions to the field of clinical nutrition.


May, 2007

American Heart Association (National Registry of CPR – NRCPR)
In appreciation of Harborview’s commitment to Resuscitation Care and Patient Outcomes, and for the continued support of the National Registry of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation.


March, 2007

The American Association of Critical Care Nurses
The prestigious Beacon Award for excellence in critical care was presented to four of Harborview’s Intensive Care Units: Surgery (SICU), Coronary (CICU), Medical (MICU) and Trauma (TICU). Harborview was the first hospital in Washington to win a Beacon Award and the first in the nation to have more than two ICUs receive the award.


February, 2007

Family-Centered Care Award. Honorable Mention received for ICU Liaison Program.

January, 2007 

AO Foundation (Davos, Switzerland)
AO Innovation Prize awarded to Dr. Sigvard T. Hansen Jr., director of the Sigvard T. Hansen Foot and Ankle Institute at Harborview, for lifetime achievements and exceptional contributions to the fields of trauma, reconstructive and orthopaedic foot surgery.

U.S. Association of Military Surgeons
Sustaining Membership Lecture Award presented to Dr. Bruce J. Sangeorzan, chief of Orthopaedic Service and Traumatology at Harborview, for outstanding contributions in the field of medical research.

Columbia University Medical Center
2006 Naomi Berrie Award for Outstanding Achievement in Diabetes Research presented to Dr. Michael Schwartz, section head of clinical nutrition at Harborview, in recognition of major contributions to the field of diabetes research.

American Thoracic Society
2007 Distinguished Achievement Award presented to Dr. David Pierson, medical director of respiratory care at Harborview, for outstanding contributions to the fight against respiratory disease.
