HARC Clinical Research Advisory Panel

The HARC has formed a Clinical Research Advisory Panel, chaired by the HARC Director, Sam Sharar, MD, and with representatives from current areas of clinical and/or research emphasis at Harborview Medical Center [HMC] (see list and brief biographies below).

These and other senior faculty members are committed to providing support for students, residents, fellows, and junior faculty who wish to participate in clinical research:


Sam R. Sharar, MD, is the HARC Director and a professor in the University of Washington Dept. of Anesthesiology. He is board-certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology, with clinical fellowship training in pediatric anesthesia and research fellowship training in trauma and burn research under the NIH-NRSA (T32) program.

His clinical interests are in acute and perioperative care of the trauma patient, particularly pediatric trauma and burn victims. He has laboratory, preclinical (animal and human), and clinical research experience in a variety of settings, with successful funding from local, foundation, federal (NIH), and industry sources. His current research interests are in prehospital trauma care, trauma system development, acute pain management for following burn injury, and virtual reality analgesia mechanisms / applications. He is also an ad hoc NIH Study Section participant, oral examiner for the American Board of Anesthesiology, and advisor to the Washington (Dept. of Health) Emergency Medical Services and Trauma Care System.

Arthur M. Lam, MD, is the Advisory Panel representative for Neuroanesthesia & Traumatic Brain Injury, a professor in the University of Washington Dept. of Anesthesiology and Dept. of Neurosurgery, and the Anesthesiologist-in-Chief at HMC. He is board-certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology and a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

His clinical and research interests are in the areas of pathophysiology and clinical management of traumatic brain injury, the perioperative management of patients with cerebral aneurysms, cerebral blood flow assessment and physiology, and anesthetic effects on spinal cord monitoring assessments, with successful funding from local, foundation, federal (NIH), and industry sources. He is also on the editorial board of the Journal of Neurosurgical Anesthesiology, past president of the Society for Neurosurgical Anesthesia and Critical Care, and Chair of the American Society of Anesthesiologists Committee on Clinical Neurosciences.

Miriam M Treggiari, MD, MPH, is the Advisory Panel representative for Critical Care, an Associate Professor in the University of Washington Dept. of Anesthesiology, and Director of ICU Research for the HMC Dept. of Anesthesiology. She is board-certified in anesthesiology by the European Academy and the Swiss Board of Anesthesiology and in intensive care medicine by the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine and the Swiss Board of Critical Care Medicine.

Her clinical and research interests are in the areas of pathophysiology and clinical management of patients with cerebral aneurysms and subarachnoid hemorrhage, glucose management and outcomes in critically ill patients, and outcomes assessment in critically ill patients, with successful funding from local, foundation, federal (NIH), and international sources. She is also Associate Medical Director for the Cystic Fibrosis Therapeutics Development Network Coordinating Center in Seattle, WA.

Lorri A. Lee, MD, is the Advisory Panel representative for Spine Surgery and an Associate Professor in the University of Washington Dept. of Anesthesiology and Dept. of Neurosurgery (adjunct). She is board-certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology, with research fellowship training in transplantation biology at the Massachusetts General Hospital.

Her clinical and research interests are in the areas of perioperative management and complications of patients undergoing spine surgery, neuroanesthesia for patients with traumatic brain injury and cerebral aneurysms, and perioperative visual loss associated with spine and neurosurgical procedures, with successful funding from local and foundation sources. She is also Director of the American Society of Anesthesiologists Perioperative Visual Loss Registry, a member of the ASA Committee on Professional Liability, and on the editorial board of the Anesthesia Patient Safety Foundation.

Monica S. Vavilala, MD, is the Advisory Panel representative for Pediatrics and an Associate Professor in the University of Washington Dept. of Anesthesiology, Dept. of Pediatrics, and Dept. of Neurosurgery (adjunct). She is board-certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology and the American Board of Pediatrics.

Her clinical and research interests are in the areas of pathophysiology and acute/perioperative management of pediatric traumatic brain injury, trauma system effects on pediatric trauma care, and pediatric cerebral blood flow assessment and interpretation, with successful funding from local, foundation, and federal (NIH). She is also on the editorial board of the Journal of Neurosurgical Anesthesiology and an NIH (NICHD) Study Section member.
