There is a definite College Connection at UW Medical Center. About half of the volunteers at the medical center are college students, most of whom are undergraduate students at the University of Washington. Others are from the greater Seattle area community and private colleges. There are even students from universities from around the world.
What can you do to help at UW Medical Center?
There are dozens of choices. Most students begin as Escorts, transporting patients and delivering lab specimens and medical charts throughout the medical center. Many students who complete the prerequisite of service at the escort desk go on to work in one of the following:
- Emergency Room
- Operating Room
Still other students choose to volunteer in areas where they will gain actual experience in their field of interest. Among the options are:
- Admitting/Registration
- Clinics (i.e. Pediatric Care Center, Family Medical Center)
- Dental Care Clinic
- Medical Records
- Nursing Units
- Physical Therapy
What are the benefits?
When volunteering at UW Medical Center, college students work side by side with staff and faculty who are the tops in their fields and:
- Gain skills in your career field
- Add to a resume actual experience in a medical center setting
- Do work that is valued by patients and staff
- Fit volunteering in between classes, since the medical center is conveniently located on campus.
Where can you help?
