The UW Medicine Board comprises community volunteers appointed by the University of Washington Board of Regents. The UW Medicine Board advises and assists the CEO (Chief Executive Officer) and Dean of the School of Medicine in strategic planning and oversight of programs across UW Medicine, including the faculty practice plans, Harborview Medical Center, the School of Medicine, UW Medical Center, and UW Medicine Neighborhood Clinics.

Orin C. Smith |  | Orin C. Smith, Board ChairOrin C. Smith, retired president and chief executive officer of Starbucks Coffee Co., is chair of the UW Medicine board. He is a member of several other boards of directors in the community, including the YMCA of Greater Seattle and the Alliance for Education. He joined Starbucks in 1990 and has headed all business activities there since 1994. He previously spent 14 years with Deloitte and Touche in management consulting, has taught at the college level and served in two state administrations as chief financial officer.

 |  | Charlotte Guyman, Vice ChairCharlotte Guyman is vice chair of the UW Medicine Board. She earned both bachelor's and M.B.A. degrees from the UW, was formerly general manager of MSN Internet sales and marketing for Microsoft, and has worked on MSNBC and several Microsoft consumer project lines. Her experience includes development of learning software for adults and children and the pioneering Internet application, Expedia. She has been general manager of Kids and Games software for Microsoft, as well as director of international marketing and director of consumer division marketing. She recently became a Director for the company Berkshire Hathaway. |

Mark A. Emmert |  | Mark A. EmmertMark A. Emmert is the 30th president of the University of Washington. Emmert's top goal as president of the UW is to further expand the University's stellar national and international standing. Before coming to the UW, he served as chancellor of Louisiana State University and chancellor and provost of the University of Connecticut. He was a J.W. Fulbright Administrative Fellow and a visiting scholar in Melbourne. He was an American Council on Education Fellow and served as chair of the Council of Academic Affairs for the National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges. He is co-chair of this council's Board of Oceans and Atmosphere. He received his bachelor's degree from the UW, and a master's degree and doctorate in public administration from the Maxwell School of Syracuse University. |

 |  | Michael D. GarveyMichael Garvey is chairman of Saltchuk Resources, Inc., a holding company with investments primarily in the maritime industry. He formerly practiced law with the firms of Preston Thorgrimson and Garvey, Schubert & Barer, where he was a founding member.
Among his past and current business associations are Ste. Michelle Vintners, the K-2 Ski Co., Columbia River Farms Corp., Cascade Management Corp. (nursing homes), lumber companies, Foss Maritime Co., Totem Ocean Trailer Express, Inc., Tollycraft Yachts, KCM (architects and engineers), and SeaBear Co.

Allan C. Golston |  | Allan C. Golston
As the United States program president for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Allan C. Golston oversees education, U.S. libraries, and Pacific Northwest grant programs, as well as U.S. Program Advocacy and Special Initiatives. Golston, who joined the foundation in 1999, most recently served as chief financial and administrative officer.
Golston's professional experience spans the fields of health care, software development, consulting, and public accounting. Golston is a certified public accountant and holds a master's degree in business administration from Seattle University and a bachelor's of science in accounting from the University of Colorado.
Before joining the Gates Foundation, Golston served as director of finance for Swedish Health Services, director of finance and controller for the University of Colorado Hospital, and director of business analysis and product development at MIS, Inc.
He is an active community volunteer in several nonprofit regional and national organizations and has served on a number of boards, including New Futures, Philanthropy Northwest, and the Public Library of Science. He was a fellow of the British-American Project and a delegate to the United States/Japan Leadership Program. |

 |  | Gerald GrinsteinGerald Grinstein is a former president of the UW Board of Regents. He retired as non-executive chair of Agilent Technologies, is a principal of the Madrona Investment Group, and is a member of the boards of directors for several corporations, including PACCAR, Inc.; Delta Air Lines; Vans, Inc., and the Pittston Company.
He has served as chair and CEO of Western Airlines and of Burlington Northern, and is a former partner in the firm of Preston, Thorgrimson, Ellis & Holman. He was also chief counsel for the U.S. Senate Committee on Interstate and Foreign Commerce and administrative aide to the late Senator Warren G. Magnuson. He is co-chair of the UW Campaign for Washington and active in community organizations, including serving on the boards of the Seattle Symphony, Seattle Foundation and Long Live the Kings. He earned a bachelor's degree from Yale University and his law degree from Harvard University. |

Sally Jewell is president and CEO of REI, a national retail cooperative with 3 million active members. REI provides quality outdoor gear and clothing through 90 retail locations and its award-winning website, rei.com. REI is known today as a leader in the outdoor retail industry, an active voice for environmental stewardship in local communities, and one of FORTUNE magazine’s 100 Best Companies to Work For. Before joining REI, Sally spent 19 years in the banking industry, where she held executive leadership roles. Earlier in her career, she worked as an engineer for Mobil Oil Corporation.
An active leader in the community, Sally is a member of the UW Board of Regents. She is also on the board of the National Parks Conservation Association, and is one of the founding board members of the Mountains to Sound Greenway Trust, a nonprofit coalition dedicated to preserving and enhancing the 100 miles of open space land along I-90. In addition, Sally is active with the non-profit Initiative for Global Development, a group ofbusiness leaders working to end global poverty. She has been active in many non-profit and civic leadership roles in her 30-year business career.
Sally is a graduate of the University of Washington. She was raised in and around Seattle, and has been married to Warren Jewell for 28 years. They have two children in college.

Shan Mullin, former chair of the boards of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center (FHCRC) and the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (SCCA), is a partner in the Seattle office of the Perkins Coie law firm. He earned both a bachelor's degree in business administration and a law degree from the UW.
He has been a leader for numerous community organizations, and is now a board member for the Alki Foundation, Alliance for Education, Greater Seattle Chamber of Commerce, Trade Development Alliance, Washington Council on International Trade, Washington State China Relations Council and the United Way of King County Endowment Program. He chairs the Norman Archibald Charitable Foundation board and continues as a member of the boards for FHCRC and SCCA.
Among other awards, he was named Citizen of the Year in 1995 by the Municipal League of King County. He received the Distinguished Alumni Award from the UW Law School in 2004 and the A.K. Guy Award for Volunteer Service from the YMCA, also in 2004.

Julie A. Nordstrom |  | Julie A. NordstromJulie A. Norstrom is a full-time parent to three children and a part-time community volunteer. She has served on the board of Seattle Children's Home and on the advisory board of Child Haven. She has volunteered at Children's Hospital and Regional Medical Center in several different capacities, and is currently working on projects for the UW Medical Center and Children's Hospital. She participated in Leadership Tomorrow and completed the program in June of 2005. She volunteers at her children's school in a variety of ways. She was formerly an associate for the law firm of Stafford, Frey, Cooper, and Stewart where she worked in the construction and surety division. She was also a law clerk for Justice James Dolliver of the Washington Supreme Court. She earned her J.D. from Seattle University and her B.A. in political science from the UW. |

Dennis I. Okamoto
is a 1970 graduate of the UW with a B.A. in general business. Okamoto has held many significant leadership positions in local business and community organizations. He retired in 1996 as regional vice president for US West, now Qwest. He served in Governor Booth Gardner's cabinet as director of the Department of Revenue and is a past president of the Japan America Society. He chairs the board of AAA of Washington/Inland, and is Vice Chair of the board of Watermark Credit Union and Vice Chair of the board of the
Washington Technology Center.

Dr. Paul G. Ramsey is the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of UW Medicine and Dean of the School of Medicine at the University of Washington. He graduated from Harvard College in 1971 with honors in Biochemistry and received his M.D. from Harvard Medical School in 1975. Following completion of residency training in Internal Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital, he came to the University of Washington in 1978. He served as Coordinator of Student Teaching for the Department of Medicine from 1982-1990 and was Associate Chair of the Department from 1988-1990. He was appointed as Chair of the Department of Medicine in 1992 and became the first holder of the Robert G. Petersdorf Endowed Chair in Medicine in 1995. He served as Chair of the Department of Medicine until June 1997 when he was appointed Vice President for Medical Affairs and Dean of the School of Medicine. Ramsey has received the Distinguished Teacher Award from the University of Washington School of Medicine’s graduating class three times (in 1984, 1986, and 1987) and the Margaret Anderson Award from the University of Washington graduating class of 1989. The latter Award recognizes exceptional support of medical students.
Ramsey is noted for developing methods to assess physicians’ clinical competence. He has been the Principal Investigator on several research grants related to assessment of physicians’ clinical skills and has served as a Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation Faculty Scholar in General Internal Medicine for five years. Ramsey received the John P. Hubbard Award from the National Board of Medical Examiners in 1999 in recognition of his research contributions in the field of physician evaluation. He has served on many national committees and is a member of several professional organizations. He is an elected member of the Association of American Physicians and of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences. |

Herman Sarkowsky |  | Herman Sarkowsky
Herman Sarkowsky is President of Sarkowsky Investment Corporation.
He was born in Gera, Germany and has resided in Seattle since 1937. He was educated at Broadway High School and graduated in 1949 from the University of Washington with a B.A. in Business.
He has been in the home building and construction business since 1950. He is active in a number of real estate partnerships and developments. He was previously a partner in Frederick & Nelson Department Stores and developer of the 62-story Key Tower in downtown Seattle.
Sarkowsky was an owner and Managing Partner of the Seattle Seahawks (member of the National Football League) and former Managing Partner and owner of the Portland Trailblazers Basketball Club (member of the National Basketball Association). He is involved in breeding and racing thoroughbred horses and has served as a member of the Washington State Racing Association.
He has served on a number of trade association boards, including Past President of the Tacoma Home Building Association, Past National Chairman of the Legislative Committee and Lifetime Board Member of the National Association of Home Builders.
Sarkowsky is very active in University of Washington affairs, having served as Past President of the University of Washington Alumni Fund, Past Chairman of the University of Washington President’s Club, Past Member of the Board of Trustees University of Washington Alumni Association, Trustee and Past Chairman of the University Hospital Board. He also served as a member of the University’s Board of Regents. He served as Chairman of the first Capital Fund Drive for the University of Washington Medical School and Hospital. He also served as a member of the Executive Committee of the University of Washington Foundation Board.
In addition, Sarkowsky was Chairman, Board of Trustees of Children’s Hospital Foundation and was the Board Chair of the Seattle Art Museum and continues to serve on that Board. He has also served on the Boards of the Seattle Foundation, United Way, Seattle Repertory Theatre, Seattle Symphony and served as Past President and Lifetime Member of the Board of Patrons of Northwest Civic, Cultural and Charitable Organization (PONCHO).
He is also active in numerous Seattle Jewish Community functions including Past President of the Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle.
Sarkowsky and his wife, Faye, reside in Seattle, Washington. They have a daughter Cathy; son Steven; daughter-in-law Stacy; and grandsons Max, Noah and Shiah, all of whom reside in Seattle.

|  | JoAnn TaricaniJoAnn Taricani is an associate professor and chair of the Division of Music History at the UW School of Music. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in music history, and has published articles in the fields of American and Renaissance music, including work on music written by the novelist Henry Fielding, published by Oxford University Press in 2004. At the UW, she has chaired the provost's Academic Advisory Committee on Legislative Matters, and the Faculty Council on University Relations, and served on several presidental task forces. She served as the faculty legistlative representative and subsequently worked in the UW Office of Government Relations. From 2003 to 2005 she held the position of special counsel to the president of the University of Michigan, where she continues to provide services as a consultant on university events. |
