Position Summary
The Director of Coding and Charge Capture has direct oversight and accountability for all aspects of the Department of Coding and Charge Capture. S/he is responsible for ensuring that: (i) each clinical department’s coding structure meets the needs of the department and its physicians while simultaneously enhancing UW Physicians’(UWP) culture of compliance and Business Excellence, (ii) all coders are effectively, efficiently, and accurately conducting all aspects of coding for their assigned department, (iii) physician champions and compliance trainers are appropriately incorporated into the coding and charge capture process, and (iv) complete charge capture/reconciliation is conducted and communicated weekly to the clinical departments.
The Director of Coding and Charge Capture has overall responsibility for all staff within the Coding and Charge Capture Department and directly supervises the Assistant Director of Coding and Charge Capture, the Manager of Charge Capture and Coding Initiatives, Coding Trainer/QA Liaison and the Department Administrative Assistant. The Director provides leadership and direction regarding critical decision-making that affects performance management strategies as they relate to the Coding and Charge Capture process within UWP.
The Director will routinely work with Senior Leadership throughout UW Medicine, Department Chairs and Directors, Physician Champions and Physicians. S/he will participate on Board level committees and represent UWP members in matters relating to this critical front-end revenue cycle process.
Minimum Qualifications
Education:
|
- Bachelor's degree required, preferably in health care related field or business. Masters degree, preferred.

Experience:
|
- Minimum of five years senior level management experience within an academic health care environment.
- Experience in physician coding and/or compliance required.
- Experience with work flow analysis and process improvement required.

| Certifications, License Requirements: |
- Professional Coding Certification highly desired.
|
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
|
- Knowledge of ICD-9, CPT-4, and medical documentation requirements, including Teaching Physician guidelines.
- In-depth knowledge of federal and state regulations as they pertain to physician and other health care provider coding.
- Knowledge of sophisticated professional billing software required; Epic Professional Resolute strongly preferred.
- Ability to orchestrate change to improve work flow and affect positive organizational outcomes.
- Proven track record of strong business and political acumen.
- Demonstrated ability to motivate and lead teams toward continuous improvement and increased efficiency.
- Strong customer service and relationship management skills.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Provides oversight and direction for the coding and charge capture department.
- Anticipates external and internal factors that require operational, system or personnel changes within assigned areas.
- Actively and continuously analyzes workflows, organizational structure, staffing assignments or other factors to ensure optimal performance; makes recommendations and modifications, as necessary.
- Directs or personally performs root-cause analysis to make performance improvement decisions and implement change.
- As a member of the senior management team, participates in the development of goals, objectives and tactical plans consistent with the organizational strategic plan and vision.
- Advances the organization’s ability to meet and exceed key strategic initiatives.
- Effectively coordinates and communicates operational activities and planning efforts within UWP and affected areas across UW Medicine.
- Collaborates with internal and external partners, as necessary, to improve coding and charge capture performance and processes.
- Provides timely, accurate, and professional responses to questions and concerns from internal and external customers.
- Directs and supports Assistant Director of Coding and Charge Capture with carrying out his/her responsibilities related to management of the daily operations of the Department, including:
- Charge reconciliation and reporting.
- Key department metrics such as daily charges, work queue volumes, and incoming/outgoing coding and charge entry volumes.
- Staff: levels, quality and productivity, and training.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

Incumbents must demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the confidentiality of employee information, UWP plans, initiatives, and financial information, and patient privacy rights. Job duties must be performed with minimum access to and use of UWP employee and/or patient information. Incumbents are required to engage in active discussion with subordinates on the requirements for reporting of compliance concerns and the company’s commitment to non-retaliation for reporting such concerns. Incumbents must promptly report all compliance concerns.
Physical Demands/Working Conditions
Must be able to perform work, with or without accommodation, within a normal office environment involving sitting, standing, keyboarding, and occasional reaching, stretching, bending, moving about, and lifting up to 10 pounds.
