The Medical Student Research Training Program (MSRTP) provides M.D. students the opportunity to participate in a full-time, 10-week summer research project — under the supervision of a faculty member — between their first and second years of medical school. Participating students present their work at the School’s annual poster session and submit a final paper in standard scientific format. Many students go on to submit their papers for publication. We are fortunate that our students are supported by the contributors and funds listed below.
Boyd Scholarship Trust Fund
This fund supports scholarships for needy, worthy, advanced students in the School of Medicine who are conducting research into cancer, heart diseases, children’s diseases, and nervous diseases.
Bradshaw Trust Fund
This fund was established to support research in epilepsy or other disorders of the human central nervous system or other worthy health problems.
Julia H. Lane Foundation Fellowship
The Julia H. Lane Foundation Fellowship was established to support medical students who participate in the Medical Student Research Training Program.
Franklin Reedy Endowment Fund
Franklin Reedy was a graduate of Queen Anne High School and the University of Washington, where he was a member of Delta Chi Fraternity. He was deputy King County assessor and retired in 1971. Mr. Reedy died in 1975, and the School of Medicine received a number of contributions in his memory.
In the ensuing years, the School of Medicine has used the fund to benefit many students, many whom were participants in the School’s Medical Student Research Training Program. MSRTP provides approximately 30 funded opportunities for UW School of Medicine students in Seattle and regional WWAMI (Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, and Idaho) sites to participate in a full-time, 10-week summer research project under the supervision of a faculty member. The endowment will support MSRTP students conducting drug-abuse and addiction-related research, as well as cancer-related research.
Patricia Samons-Smith Endowed Fund
Patricia Samons-Smith was a gifted medical student and brought special talents to the entering class of 1985. She was a health-care professional and was committed to providing excellence in medicine. This endowment, which bears her name, will preferably be awarded to a woman in her thirties who may have had prior experience in one of many health-care disciplines.
