UW Medicine Alumni Association Endowed Scholarship Fund
The UW Medicine Alumni Association has a three-part mission: to have members serve as diplomats and advocates in the communities where medical alumni live and work; to provide support for students, residents, and fellows through programs, scholarships, fellowships, and financial contributions; and to establish and maintain a sense of unity among alumni.
Dedicated to fulfilling this mission and inspired by the desire to participate in the University of Washington’s last campaign: Creating Futures, the UW Medicine Alumni Association made a lead gift to create this endowed scholarship. The association then challenged alumni to match its gift. In the spirit of unity that underscores their commitment to their alma mater, alumni responded generously, creating a permanent legacy that pays tribute to their education while providing support for medical students in perpetuity. This endowment — combined with funds from the Medical Student Alumni Fund and the student loan fund that preceded it — stands as a lasting testament to the Alumni Association and its mission to support medical students.
UW Medicine Class of 1953 Endowed Scholarship Fund
In honor of its 50th reunion, the Class of 1953 established a legacy that will support the future of the medical profession and succeeding generations of doctors. These alumni hope to help relieve the burden of debt medical students experience and, in turn, give students greater freedom in choosing where and what they wish to practice.
UW Medicine Class of 1955 “Fifty at Fifty” Endowed Scholarship Fund
Recognizing that medical-school costs have grown significantly over time, leaders in the Class of 1955 agreed to use their 50th reunion to focus on scholarship: to connect with fellow classmates and to ask for their participation in a fundraising campaign.
With strong leadership from its class reunion committee, the Class of 1955 decided to use the University of Washington’s Matching Gift Initiative (MGI) program to make a major gift to scholarship. The Class of 1955 “Fifty at Fifty” Endowed Scholarship Fund will recognize the class’s thoughtfulness and achievements in perpetuity.
UW Medicine Class of 1956 Endowed Scholarship Fund
A 50th anniversary is a time for celebration — and for reflection. And, the members of the Class of 1956 thought, a time to give back to the school that meant so much to their education and their careers. To celebrate their anniversary, the Class of 1956 created a scholarship fund to support students at the School of Medicine. In helping establish a tradition of class giving at UW Medicine, the Class of 1956 also is providing a scholarship resource that students will use for generations to come.
UW Medicine Class of 1957 Endowed Scholarship Fund
Recognizing that medical-school costs have grown significantly over time, leaders in the Class of 1957 agreed to use their 50th reunion to focus on scholarship: to connect with fellow classmates and to ask for their participation in a fundraising campaign.
With strong leadership from its class reunion committee, the Class of 1957 decided to use the University of Washington’s Students First campaign program to make a major gift to scholarship. The UW Medicine Class of 1957 Endowed Scholarship Fund recognizes the class’s thoughtfulness and achievements in perpetuity.
UW Medicine Class of 1958 Endowed Scholarship
The Class of 1958 is continuing the alumni tradition of celebrating a 50th anniversary reunion by establishing an endowed scholarship. This fund will serve not only to support medical students at the School of Medicine, but also will serve as a permanent tribute to the Class of 1958’s achievements and generosity.
UW Medicine Class of 1959 Endowed Scholarship
To celebrate the 50th anniversary of their medical-school graduation, members of the Class of 1959 are following a tradition set by previous classes: creating an endowed scholarship for students in the School of Medicine. In helping M.D. students in perpetuity, the UW Medicine Class of 1959 Endowed Scholarship aims to relieve the burden of debt medical school students encounter and also commemorate the generosity and achievements of the class’s members.
UW Medicine Class of 1961 Endowed Scholarship
The Class of 1961 celebrated its 45th anniversary in 2006 by undertaking a campaign for student support. Taking their inspiration from other classes that have created scholarship funds to celebrate major landmarks, leaders from the Class of 1961 have made it their mission to raise money to create an endowed scholarship. “We all had a great opportunity when we were in school,” says Bill Champion, M.D. ’61, Res. ’65, the alumnus who led the Class of 1961 campaign, “and it is important to see that others get the same benefits.”
UW Medicine Class of 1965 Endowed Scholarship
With strong leadership from class representatives John H. (Jack) Pierce, M.D., and Raymond E. Vath, M.D., the Class of 1965 decided to reduce student debt load at the UW School of Medicine by increasing the number of scholarships available to medical students. To this end, the class decided to take advantage of the University of Washington’s Matching Gift Initiative program to leverage their generosity.
While this preference is in no way binding or exclusive, the representatives hope that medical students who are also children of School of Medicine alumni will be considered as potential scholarship recipients.
UW Medicine Class of 1966 Endowed Scholarship
In honor of its 40th reunion, the Class of 1966 established a legacy that will support the future of the medical profession and succeeding generations of doctors. By creating the UW Medicine Class of 1966 Endowed Scholarship, the class hopes to help relieve the burden of debt that medical students carry, giving students greater freedom to choose how to practice medicine. With less debt, students can more easily pursue lower-paying but essential fields, such as academic or rural medicine.
UW Medicine Diversity Scholarship Fund
The UW Medicine Diversity Scholarship was established to provide scholarships for M.D. students, and the fund supports the School of Medicine’s goals: to promote a diverse student body and a professional workforce that will meet the health-care needs of our region and world.
UW Medicine Endowed Scholarship Fund
This endowment was established in 2002 to provide scholarship support for students in the UW School of Medicine. The UW Medicine Endowed Scholarship Fund is the School of Medicine’s premier unrestricted scholarship fund, providing scholarships to students with either financial need or academic merit. The scholarship was created from the proceeds of the Dean of Medicine Loan Fund, the Medical Student Assistance Loan Fund, and the Medical Student Financial Aid Fund, and is now sustained by new donor contributions, such as that provided by the estate of Arnelle F. Fischer.
UW Medicine Students First Endowed Scholarship Fund
When the University of Washington announced the Students First program, a program that matches gifts of $100,000 or more to scholarship, the School of Medicine saw an opportunity to bring donors together to support M.D. students. In 2007, the School launched a campaign to secure contributions from alumni, faculty, staff, and friends. Contributors responded enthusiastically; the School exceeded its goal and secured the match. In 2008, the UW Medicine Students First Scholarship Fund was endowed to provide scholarships to M.D. students for years to come.
UW Physicians Endowed Scholarship Fund
In creating this endowment, Mika Siannas, M.D., Ph.D., Res. ’88, and Jennifer Siannas took advantage of the Faculty-Staff-Retiree Campaign for Students, which will match their donation. Dr. and Mrs. Sinnamon’s fund will provide scholarships to M.D. students, and pays tribute to the doctors who work within the UW Medicine Neighborhood Clinics in the Puget Sound Region.
