Community Training Center Opportunities

American Heart Association Approved Training

Harborview Medical Center is an authorized training center for the American Heart Association (AHA). The AHA is the recognized authority in resuscitation science and training.

Harborview offers many opportunities through the Community Training Center (CTC). To register online for any of our courses, click the appropriate register online button, or fill out an application form located in the class brochure and fax or mail your it to the CTC.

Unless noted in the confirmation, all training is held in the Research & Training Building located at 300 Ninth Ave., Seattle, WA 98104. Refer to the whiteboard, located in the lobby, for the room number. You can reschedule your registration to another class no more than once. After that you will be charged a new registration fee.

ACLS New Provider (two-day)

For new providers or to review material

This two-day ACLS course is designed for health-care professionals whose occupation requires proficiency in ACLS skills. It is appropriate for providers with some knowledge of cardiac rhythms and medications but who have not taken ACLS education in the past, for those whose cards have expired, or who would like a review of the guidelines. This course consists of a series of learning stations including:

  • ACLS algorithms
  • Rhythm recognition
  • BLS proficiency
  • ACLS pharmacology
  • Written evaluation

Preparation

A study packet, consisting of the ACLS provider manual, six study guides and a pre-test, will be mailed to you three weeks before class. Areas of emphasis include basic ECG knowledge, BLS proficiency, dysrhythmia recognition, ACLS pharmacology and algorithms. Chapter study questions and answers in the appendices will help new and reviewing providers prepare for the course. The pre-test must be completed and brought to class.

CEU’s: 13.8 contact hours

Class times:

  • 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. (day one)
  • 8 a.m. – 1 p.m. (day two)

Provider cards and CEU certificates will be issued upon successful completion of course.

This one-day ACLS renewal class will provide health-care providers with previous ACLS education the opportunity to update their skills in accordance with the standards and guidelines for the American Heart Association. The following knowledge and skills will be evaluated:

  • ACLS algorithms
  • Rhythm recognition
  • BLS proficiency
  • ACLS pharmacology
  • Written evaluation

Note: In order to register for the ACLS Instructor course, you must complete the instructor candidate application form (Word) and submit it to the CTC, along with a letter of recommendation, to complete the registration process.

The purpose of the ACLS instructor course is to train new ACLS instructors. New instructor candidates are required to have current ACLS credentials good for more than 90 days after date of instructor course and have comprehensive experience in Advanced Cardiac Life Support subject matter. The course will focus on facilitation techniques.

The ACLS instructor course is comprised of two parts. Part one is eight hours in the classroom; part two is an online interactive core instructor training.

The core instructor course needs to be completed prior to instructor card issued.

BLS for Health-Care Providers

This universal course is designed to meet the Basic Life Support (CPR) certification requirements for both the new and the renewing health-care provider. Certification is required for anyone who intends to enter a clinical program of study or work in a medical or patient care setting.

  • Relief of foreign-body airway obstruction (FBAO) for adults, children and infants
  • Current AHA guidelines

BLS Renewal

For health-care providers seeking first-time training or renewal of their BLS card

Part 1: Completed online through a key purchased from the HMC Community Training Center. Through interactive scenarios, this course teaches:

  • One- and two-rescuer CPR (adult, child, infant)
  • AED use (adult, child)
  • Bag-mask use (adult, child, infant)
  • Rescue breathing and choking (adult, child infant)

Course can be completed in approximately two to three hours.

Part 2: *Students must complete a skills practice and testing session with an AHA BLS Instructor to earn their AHA BLS health-care provider card. After completion of the online portion, the student will call the Harborview Community Training Center to complete the skills validation.

This Basic Life Support instructor course is designed to prepare current Basic Life Support providers for their role as a course facilitator for American Heart Association Basic Life Support and Heartsaver First Aid courses.

We do not charge a separate fee for course materials. Our fee includes the following:

  • BLS instructor manual
  • BLS student manual
  • Core instructor course

The following prerequisites must be met:

  • Copy of AHA BLS health-care provider card must be submitted with registration.
  • BLS health-care provider card must be current for next 90 days from date of instructor course.

ECG and Pharmacology

$95 - UW/Harborview participant (includes text)

The course is a pre-course option for ACLS students and other health-care providers, or is also intended for ACLS students who need to improve after the ACLS pre-course self-assessment test. It is specifically designed to address a key knowledge gap in electrocardiogram (ECG) and pharmacology, the American Heart Association’s adult ECG and pharmacology course is a new program focused on specific ECG recognition skills and drug treatment knowledge.

  • Normal ECG measurements
  • Basic arrhythmias

Pharmacology

  • Basic ACLS drugs and usage
  • Drugs, doses and routes or administration during cardiovascular emergencies
  • Integrate basic drug pharmacology into ACLS algrothms
