UWMC Expansion

Since the early 1960s, UW Medical Center has cared for the region’s smallest, most fragile babies. And now, the medical center is expanding to build a larger neonatal intensive care unit that will care for up to 50 newborns. The expanded building also will include a 32-bed adult acute care unit and additional space for the most advanced diagnostic imaging technology.

The new wing will adjoin the hospital on its south side, spanning Columbia Road. The building is scheduled to open in fall 2012.

Watch the construction in progress through still photos that change every 15 minutes. One view faces east; the other view faces west.

Traffic, walkways impacted

Traffic and pedestrians walkways will be impacted throughout construction. Columbia Road on the south side of UWMC are closed to through traffic throughout the project. Buses continue to use Columbia Road to drop off and pick up children attending the Experimental Education Unit on the south side of Columbia Road.

Patients and visitors to the Center on Human Development and Disability (CHDD) should check for the latest construction updates before arriving at their appointments.

The first phase of the project includes widening Columbia Road to allow two-way access to the Surgery Pavilion and the Emergency Department. This phase also includes relocating utilities under Columbia Road.

Changes to Shuttle Service

  • The Health Sciences Express now picks up and drops off on the north side of N.E. Pacific Street above Triangle Parking Garage.
  • To access the stop, patients and employees should use the tunnel between UWMC and the Triangle Garage, located near the hospital’s main entrance.
  • The Health Sciences Express makes an additional stop on the north side of N.E. Pacific across from Hitchcock Hall (which is between the Foege Building and the Health Sciences rotunda entrance).
  • Shuttles to UW Medicine at South Lake Union, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance pick up and drop off at the N.E. Pacific stop across from Hitchcock Hall. These shuttles no longer stop at the D-Wing on the south side of Health Sciences.
  • They will continue to pick up and drop off from the east side of UWMC.
  • Check UW Shuttles for more information.

Construction at a Glance

Winter 2009-10

The drilling of 92 concrete piers is 75 percent complete. These drilled piers, which are four feet in diameter and 50 feet long, are drilled into the ground to support the building.

Drilling, lagging and shoring of 200 soldier piles, or supports for the building, continues and should be complete in late January 2010.

Mass excavation is scheduled to continue through March 2010.

January 2010: Additional construction camp trailers will be placed near the site to accommodate subcontractors.

Safety Tips
