Regional Heart Center

For Patients and Families

UW Medicine Regional Heart Center provides multidisciplinary comprehensive cardiovascular services for Harborview Medical Center, UW Medical Center (UWMC), Northwest Hospital & Medical Center and Valley Medical Center. Patients also receive care through cardiology clinics at the medical centers, the UW Medicine Eastside Specialty Center, Regional Heart Center Alderwood, and affiliate clinics Summit Cardiology and Western Washington Medical Group Cardiology.

General Cardiology

  • Preventive and Consultative Services: Cardiology consultations and management for all varieties of heart problems including cardiac risk assessment, coronary artery disease, arrhythmias such as atrial ablation, valve disease, cholesterol management and high blood pressure management.
  • Diagnostic services: Exercise stress testing (treadmill testing) and electrocardiograms (ECG/EKG).

Cardiology Imaging Services

  • Echocardiography reveals the structure and function of a patient’s heart. Our sonographers perform all modalities (e.g., 2-D, 3-D, pulsed Doppler, bicycle stress, etc.) to differentiate patients’ dysfunctions.
  • CT angiography: Angiography via computed tomography (CT) gives physicians a 3-D view of the heart and its vessels. We use two highly advanced CT scanners, with garnet detectors, to optimize images and shorten scans for people with suspected diseased arteries, aortic wall tears, pulmonary embolisms and heart deficits.
  • Nuclear medicine stress testing is a non-invasive imaging procedure to detect the effects of narrowings or blockages in blood vessels to the heart. We routinely use SPECT (single photon emission computed tomography) and positron emission tomography (PET), a newer modality that reveals more-precise details.
  • Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging: “Cardiac MR” is a non-invasive, magnetic instrument that, as with CT angiography, helps doctors discern a heart-related condition or confirm changes to a condition. UW Medicine specialists perform more cardiac MR procedures than most other Pacific Northwest health systems experience.

Advanced Therapies and Hybrid Procedures

  • Interventional cardiology: Improved catheterization instruments and imaging enable our interventionalists to unblock arteries, repair structural heart defects and implant replacement valves.
  • Cardiothoracic surgery: Our surgeons perform open and minimally invasive procedures including transplantation, coronary artery bypass grafts (CABG), aortic and mitral valve repair, and complex surgery of the aorta.
  • Electrophysiology/Arrhythmia: We diagnose and treat conditions that confuse the heart's normal rhythm. We have extensive experience implanting, managing and extracting pacemakers and defibrillator devices. We use sophisticated technologies such as 3-D mapping, cardioversion, ablation (scarring of the heart to halt arrhythmias), and ultrasound, CT and MRI scans.

Advanced Heart Failure Program

  • Heart failure: We provide diagnostic, medical and surgical options for patients with heart failure who may / may not ultimately require transplantation, including VAD therapy (above). Heart transplant remains the
    gold-standard treatment.
  • Ventricular-assist devices (VADs) are implanted pumps that improve blood flow in patients with end-stage heart failure. Our VAD program was the Northwest's first to receive The Joint Commission's certification, reflecting expertise in individualizing devices to each patient's condition.
  • Transplantation: Our team performs 20 to 30 heart transplants per year, far outpacing other heart-transplant sites in the Pacific Northwest. Success requires expertise across a broad team - surgeons, nurses,
    cardiologists, coordinators, diagnosticians and others.

Adult congenital heart disease (ACHD)

  • The ACHD program is a collaborative effort of cardiologists, cardiac surgeons and other specialists with advanced training in congenital heart conditions. Many of our clinicians treat patients at both UW Medical Center and Seattle Children’s Hospital, which can help younger patients as they mature and transition from pediatric to adult health care.

Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) Services

  • UW Regional Heart Center established a dedicated, multi-disciplinary HCM clinic that includes cardiovascular specialists and surgeons; radiologists; medical geneticists and counselors. This consolidation of patient care fosters clinical expertise, optimizes the care experience for patients, and encourages clinical and translational research.
