Surgery Pavilion lobby

For more than 15 years specialists in female pelvic floor disorders at UW Medicine have cared for residents of the Northwest with these debilitating conditions.

The opening of the Surgery Pavilion ushered in a new generation of treatment for women’s pelvic health in the Northwest by combining the Female Urology and Urogynecology providers in the same clinic. This unique combination of urologic and gynecologic expertise allows both sets of providers to work together more effectively to treat women with pelvic floor disorders.

Our team offers both surgical and non-surgical care plans. We know these conditions have an enormous impact on the quality of life and that is why our comprehensive program provides patients’ individualized care and support during their evaluation and surgical or non-surgical management. We are proud of our ability to care for the total patient and value the time we devote to each patient in order to understand their concerns.

Our physicians carefully assess a patient’s health history, medical issues and pelvic floor in order to tailor our care to each individual. It is our goal to make certain patients receive the education they need to make an informed decision about the care plan they select. This is why UW Medical Center patients are provided with extensive education, counseling and support during and after their evaluation.

Sacral Neuromodulation
Providers: Fialkow, Michael F., Miller, Jane L. Last Updated: Thursday, July 31, 2008

Sacral neuromodulation is a treatment for Urinary Urge Incontinence, Urinary Frequency, and Urinary Retention. It is an implantable device that delivers a low amplitude pulse stimulation to one of the nerves to the bladder.

The procedure is done in two outpatient stages. During the first stage, a small fiber is placed next to the nerve through the skin in your back.  X-ray is used to localize the exact position of the nerve before placement. You will feel a tapping or vibration in the bladder, urethra, vagina, and/or rectum when the fiber is implanted properly.

The second stage is done 1-3 weeks after the first.  During this 1-3 week trial, the fiber is connected to an external generator that looks like a pager or cellphone. You keep a record of the number of voids, urine loss, voided volumes, and catheterized volumes. If, based on the results of the bladder diary, the stimulation device has improved symptoms by 50% or better, a permanent generator is connected to the fiber and implanted beneath the skin in the buttock or hip.
