The Occupational and Environmental Medicine Clinic at Harborview offers comprehensive services for the treatment and prevention of occupational and environmentally related exposure, illness and injury. Conditions treated include respiratory problems and asthma; asbestosis; chemical exposure; upper extremity musculoskeletal injuries; carpal tunnel syndrome and other repetitive motion disorders; hearing loss; contact dermatitis; and occupational reproductive hazards.
Treatments are based on comprehensive testing performed in the clinic, medical monitoring and medical toxicology correlations, and baseline exposure screening programs. Treatment may also include recreating and studying exposures in a controlled environment, and workplace evaluations.
We offer medical surveillance and screening programs for workers in high-risk occupations, including examinations for asbestos, hazardous waste and emergency response, trade-specific situations, respirator clearances, and regulatory compliance. We offer site visits to workplaces and homes for the prevention of work or environmentally related illnesses and injuries, and the return-to-work of injured workers.
The Clinic is the designated Center of Excellence for Chemically Related Illness for the Washington State Department of Labor and Industries. Our expertise in industrial hygiene, toxicology, and environmental health are used for this work. Additionally, the full services of UW Medicine are also available for other specialty services or hospitalization.
