Stroke Rehabilitation Clinic

The Harborview Stroke Rehabilitation Clinic is a service of the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine. It provides comprehensive outpatient rehabilitation to patients who have either finished an acute inpatient rehabilitation program at Harborview, been referred directly from Harborview’s Neurology and Neurosurgery services, been referred from medical, surgical, or other services at Harborview or any other community hospital, or who reside outside King County and need outreach rehabilitation services and support programs.

The Harborview Stroke Rehabilitation Clinic offers:

  • Specialized clinical and functional assessment of the patient's progress and their potentials to ensure an optimal functional recovery and re-integration into the community.
  • Specific rehabilitative interventions such as Neurolytic Botox or Phenol blocks for treatments of regional spasticity; Intra-peri articular steroid injections for an associated synovitis, capsulitis, bursitis, tenosynovitis; Comprehensive management of pain in the paralyzed extremities such as Shoulder Hand Syndrome (RSD), thalamic pain, and other conditions, using physical therapy modalities and medication.
  • Application of orthotic devices, dynamic and statis splinting, casting, mobility aids, leg braces, and a variety of wheel chairs to improve the function of mobility and self-care.
  • Swallowing training and outpatient management of feeding tubes, and dietary components in stroke patients.
  • Bladder training and management in stroke patients with neurogenic bladder incontinence.
  • Provision of social, psychological, and vocational rehabilitative services to enhance independence and re-integration into community and family life through interviews and counseling.
  • Implementation of physical, occupational, and speech therapeutic modalities to maintain or further improve self-care, mobility, ambulation, and communication functions.
  • Integrated implementation of secondary stroke prevention strategies, such as stroke risk factor management through medical and behavioral approaches.
  • Provision of post-clinic telephone follow-up and stroke groups.
  • Promoting, arranging, and supervising Stroke Support Group monthly meetings.

Appointments and Referrals

Appointments may be scheduled through the Rehabilitation Medicine Clinic.

Referrals can be arranged with the Scheduling Coordinator (number listed below). 

A written referral should be sent to the Stroke Rehabilitation Clinic, Rehabilitation Medicine Service. Please use our UW Medicine Referral Request or equivalent signed physician's order, describing the reasons for the referral.
