Located at the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, the Breast Cancer Specialty Center provides a multi-disciplinary, one-stop approach for patients with a diagnosis of breast cancer.
Determining the best treatment plan for any individual with breast cancer is complex. It requires understanding that cancer’s biology, size and location as well as the health history of the patient. This information must then be considered with options regarding surgery, chemotherapy and radiation.
Comprehensive evaluation and treatment planning requires input from a surgeon, radiation oncologist, medical oncologist, radiologist, and pathologist.
At the Breast Cancer Specialty Center, breast specialists in each of these disciplines meet together to review a patient’s case and discuss a treatment plan. A plastic surgeon will join the team if the patient is considering breast reconstruction. This team of physicians will work with each other--and with you-- to determine the best treatment plan for you--one that takes into account not only the type of breast cancer you have, but your values, beliefs, and lifestyle. During your visit you will meet with one or more of these doctors, depending on the type of treatment recommended for you.
Because these doctors are conducting leading-edge research on breast cancer, you can be sure that you are getting the most promising new treatments available.
Patients receive a 5-step evaluation in their first visit:
- A resident meets with the patient to complete a waist up exam and obtain health history.
- The patient’s team of physician meets to review:
- the results of the physical exam and patient’s health history
- the patient’s mammograms and scans
- the patient's pathology slides.
- The patient has a second physical examination from their physician team.
- The team meets with the patient to answer questions and discuss their findings.
- The patient leaves with a treatment plan to be implemented at UW Medical Center and the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance or with the patient's referring physician.
