Specialty Services
Left untreated, iron overload can cause cirrhosis, diabetes, liver cancer, heart failure, and arthritis, and lead to premature death. However, if detected and treated in time, people with hemochromatosis, the most common inherited form of iron overload, can lead normal lives.
The Iron Overload Clinic is staffed by highly trained physicians from the UW School of Medicine's divisions of Gastroenterology and Hematology, as well as from Pathology and Medical Genetics.
Our multidisciplinary services include genetic testing for the hemochromatosis gene, as well as genetic screening and counseling for family members of patients with hemochromatosis. We are experienced in liver biopsy, one of the clinical tests often used to diagnose iron overload disease.
At UW Medical Center, your care will be provided by a team of faculty physicians, residents and other health-care providers.
