Maternal and Infant Care Clinic

FAQ / Resources

Frequently Asked Questions:

Do I have to see my midwife at the MICC? You may have your prenatal visits with your midwife at the MICC, or at three other convenient locations:

  • Hall Health Primary Care Center, on the UW campus, is especially convenient for UW faculty, staff, students, and their spouses.
  • The Young Women's Clinic, in the Center for Human Development and Disability (behind UW Medical Center), is tailored to meet the special needs of teenagers. We have a team that includes a social worker, nurse, and nutritionist who are committed to helping our clients have the best pregnancy possible.
  • Our North Seattle Public Health Center site provides the same outstanding services available to our clients at the three UW sites, plus access to the maternity support services team.

Where will I deliver my baby? You'll have your baby at UW Medical Center. Women who have their babies here consistently rate our labor and delivery services as excellent and comment on the attractive birthing rooms.

Can I have family members or friends present during my delivery? We encourage you to have anyone you want with you during labor and birth. One of the midwives will stay with you through your labor and deliver your baby. The labor and delivery nurses are very supportive, and you'll have one assigned just to you as well.

What happens if problems arise during my delivery? If problems arise, we have a team of obstetricians, perinatologists, neonatalogists (pediatricians who have advanced training in the care of newborns), and obstetrical anesthesiologists available right here in the medical center around the clock.

How long will I stay in the hospital? Most women stay in the hospital for 24 to 48 hours after birth. We tailor this to your personal situation.
