Breastfeeding Support

Breast-feeding is the healthiest feeding choice for you and your new baby. We support your decision to breast-feed and believe every mother deserves the opportunity to succeed.

UW Medical Center provides personalized prenatal care and birthing experiences for many women.

In addition, UW Medical Center is a regional referral center for high-risk pregnancy and birth, and preterm infants. This means that our Lactation Services have quick, easy access to the latest medical research on breast-feeding. They use the extensive on-line and print resources of UW's Health Sciences Library and Information Center as well as consultations with UW School of Medicine faculty physicians, to provide up-to-date information on your unique needs.

This document, Breastfeeding Versus Formula.doc (33 pages), is one such resource available. We have also compiled a list of Breastfeeding Web sites

Lactation Services

Lactation Services at UW Medical Center helps mothers and babies have the best possible breast-feeding experience. Our certified lactation consultants, who are also experienced mother/baby nurses, are available to see you at the medical center or speak to you on the phone seven days a week. They are available to help you with common challenges and special problems at any stage of breast-feeding.

The lactation consultants will work with you and your doctor or midwife to coordinate a breast-feeding plan for you and your baby.

Contacting Our Lactation Consultants

The lactation consultants are available at UW Medical Center daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. during the week, and by appointment on weekends and holidays.

If you have questions, want to make an appointment, or would like advice on breast-feeding, call Lactation Services at 206-598-4628.

Many insurance plans cover nurse consultations. Check with your insurance carrier about your policy's coverage. Some plans may require a referral from your primary care provider. You may also call UW Medical Center's Patient Financial Services at 206-685-1121 for information, or for assistance in getting insurance coverage.
