Most expectant parents want to learn as much as they can about their pregnancy, labor and birth, and new infant. Our Perinatal Education Program offers a variety of classes for expectant families. Your clinic nurse will help you select the most appropriate class for you and your support person as you prepare for parenthood.

What will you learn? Topics include breathing and relaxation techniques; labor, birth and recovery; birthing options; the support person’s role; hospital/medical procedures; pain medications; Cesarean birth and what to expect postpartum.
Class 6 covers the basics of breastfeeding, its benefits, how breastfeeding works and how to make it successful for you and your family. It also addresses common challenges and how to manage them, how partners can help, and tips for understanding your new baby’s behavior.
We encourage you to register for Baby Care Basics and Parenting as a follow-up to this series.
When should you take this class? We recommend you select a series that ends three to four weeks before your due date.
Class choices: Monday or Wednesday evenings for six weeks in a row, or a weekend series that meets on Saturday and Sunday. The weekend series does not offer as much time to practice relaxation and breathing techniques.

What will you learn? The classes will cover breathing and relaxation techniques during labor, birth and recovery, birthing options and the birthing partner’s role. It will cover pain coping skills, pain medications options, cesarean and vaginal births, and common newborn issues.
When should you take the class? Select a class series that ends at least three to four weeks before your due date. These classes are offered on week ends only.

¿Qué aprenderá?
Las clases incluyen técnicas de respiración y relajamiento, durante la labor, el nacimiento, y la recuperación, opciones de parto, y el papel del parejo/a de nacimiento. Le enseñaremos como lidiar con el dolor, las opciones de medicamentos para el dolor, y hablaremos de cesáreas, nacimiento vaginal, y como cuidar y alimentar al recién nacido.

(Follows Childbirth Preparation 101)
What will you learn? Most of what you learn during pregnancy relates to preparing for labor and birth. Topics include newborn care, how to diaper, swaddle, soothe and hold your baby. Guest families often join this class to share their experiences as braind new parents and to join in a discussion about what life will be like after the baby is born.
When should you take this class? We encourage you to take this class as a follow-up to the Childbirth Preparation 101 or as a stand-alone in the last four to six weeks of pregnancy.
Class choices: Two consecutive Tuesday evenings or a full day on Saturday.

Breathing and Relaxation 201
What you will learn: This class builds on the patterned breathing, comfort measures, visualization/relaxation and position changes learned in “Childbirth Preparation Class 101.” Couples also will explore their own unique coping skills, how to apply them to labor and birth, and further discuss the effects of hormones in labor and birth. This is an especially helpful hands-on class for birth partners. This class does not discuss medicines for pain management, interventions, or postpartum.
Who should take this class: Couples who have attended “Childbirth Preparation 101” during this pregnancy.

Breastfeeding - Beyond the Basics
(An introduction to breastfeeding is included in Childbirth Preparation 101)
What will you learn?
This class is taught by a lactaion consultant and covers returning to work/school with a breastfeeding baby. Topics include choosing a breast pump, pumping and storing milk and caring for a breastfeeding baby while mom is away. Other topics related to life with a breastfeeding baby include healthy eating for breastfeeding mothers, breastfeeding in public, infant temperament and crying and breastfeeding and sexuality.
When should you take this class? Following Childbirth Preparation 101.

This is an essential class for anyone at risk for preterm labor, including families who have a history of preterm delivery and families expecting multiples.
What will you learn? You will learn who is at risk for preterm labor and birth, how to respond promptly to the earliest signs of problems that could lead to premature birth, and about the needs of the preterm infant.
When should you take this class? Between 18 and 24 weeks of pregnancy.

Expecting Multiples
What will you learn? This is a comprehensive, prepared childbirth series of six separate classes for famlies who are expecting multiples. We recommend that families who are expecting their first babies take all six classes. Families who currently have children will benefit from classes one, three, four and six. We have found the best experience for families occurs when they take the classes in order. However, it is possible to start the classes at any point.
Many of our clients value the opportunity to connect and meet with other multiples parents, often maintaining friendships past their pregnancies. We also bring in former class members to share their pregnancies, births and parenting stories during our series.
Class choices: All classes in this series are offered on Thursday evenings. We recommend you complete the series by 32 weeks.
Cost: $40 per class per family or entire series for $200.

Class One:
“Pregnancy With Multiples” – This class provides an excellent start to your pregnancy experience of childbirth classes including an opportunity to meet and connect with other class participants – also expecting multiples! Class content will offer an overview of your pregnancy timeline, weight gain and nutritional guidelines, fraternal vs. identical babies, setting up support, connecting with local mothers of multiples, and handouts on belly and back support. We also provide information on the potential of preterm labor: clarifying bed-rest recommendations, obtaining a disabled parking permit, and planning for short-term disability.

“Labor Preparation With Multiples” – This class discusses the normal process of labor and birth, methods for coping with pain in labor including breathing and relaxation techniques, and the role of the support person in labor. “Birth of Multiples” – This class explores in depth what makes a birth with multiples different from the birth of a single baby. Topics include vaginal birth of twins, potential variations of delivery for the second baby, the roles of staff members, C-section birth and epidural anesthesia.

Infant Safety & CPR
What will you learn? This class focuses on prevention of the most common causes of injury (choking, auto accidents, burns, drowning, falls, and poisoning). Participants will learn and practice infant CPR (birth to 12 months) and choking rescue techniques with return demonstration.
This class does not provide CPR certification.
When should you take this class? This class can be taken anytime before or after baby’s birth.

Our lactation consultants are registered nurses with special training in breast-feeding and caring for moms and families. During your pregnancy they can review your health history, examine your breasts, provide education, and recommend a breast-feeding plan. After your baby is born, they can help you with breastfeeding concerns.

two hours - $75
three hours - $100
If you have private or public insurance, check with your insurance company or clinic nurse regarding coverage.

After your baby is born, you can call the lactation consultants at (206) 598-4628 from 9 a.m. - 9 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. on weekends and holidays. There is no fee for phone consultation.
