Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

At UW Medical Center's Level-III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, babies with special needs are cared for by world-leading physicians and state-of-the-art technology.

When do babies visit the NICU?
Babies under 34 weeks gestation or less than 1800 grams in weight will visit the NICU. Babies with repiratory distress requiring oxygen, or babies with possible infections, will also visit the NICU.

Who cares for babies in the NICU?
All babies are cared for by highly trained and experienced neonatologists. The NICU is staffed by registered nurses specially trained in neonatal resuscitation and care. Specialized ventilators, monitors, and telemetry are utilized. They have also received special training in early development.

What services are offered in the NICU?
In addition to the services listed above and round-the-clock physician coverage, we insert central lines that provide constant monitoring. We also conduct developmental assessments and have a long-term follow-up program.
