Neurology Clinic

Specialty Services

At the Neurology Clinic all patients are seen by a faculty neurologist and by physicians receiving specialty training in neurological disorders. Any diagnostic tests and procedures patients may need are available at UW Medical Center.

We offer the following subspecialty services:

  • Movement Disorders
Patients with Parkinson's disease, Wilson's disease, ataxia, tremor, chorea, ballismus, myoclonus, torticollis, multiple system atrophy, Huntington's disease and various forms of dystonia are seen in this clinic, as well as patients who need pre-surgical assessment for thalamotomy or pallidotomy. Our areas of special expertise include treating patients with diagnostic dilemmas and/or ongoing medical management of those with movement disorders. We also administer botulinum toxin injections for torticollis and other dystonias. Surgical options are available for Parkinson's disease and tremor. Referrals can be made by this clinic.
  • Western Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Center
This clinic is the major MS center in the Northwest. We specialize in patients whose diagnosis is unclear and those with confirmed diagnoses seeking the most suitable therapy. Diagnostic tools include MRIs, evoked potentials and occasionally, spinal taps. We have experience with the latest drug therapies and the successful management of their side effects. We also specialize in medications for symptom management, including some experimental protocols. We work closely with UW Medical Center's Rehabilitation Medicine Clinic to treat MS patients who have significant disabilities.
  • Neuromuscular Disorders
This is a new clinic treating patients with disorders of the motor neurons, peripheral nerves, neuromuscular junctions or muscles. Patients are evaluated by an attending neurologist. The emphasis of this clinic is to see patients with a variety of neuromuscular disorders including peripheral neuropathy, myopathy, ALS, and myasthenia gravis.
  • Stroke Center and Cerebrovascular Disease Prevention Clinic
The emphasis of this clinic is the evaluation and management of patients with suspected or proven cerebrovascular disease.
  • General Neurology Clinic
Neurologic problems of all varieties are evaluated in this clinic. Further referral to other neurology subspecialty clinics not mentioned in this listing may be indicated. These include neuro-ophthalmology, Muscular Dystrophy Association, dementia, and neurogenetics.
  • Epilepsy Clinic
In addition to the outpatient evaluation of patients with epilepsy, there are two closed-circuit TV inpatient beds available in UW Medical Center for 24-hour monitoring. A comprehensive approach is taken for those patients who might need epilepsy surgery through regular conferences with the departments of neurology, neurosurgery, and neuroradiology.
  • Dizziness Clinic
Patients with all forms of dizziness will be evaluated. A close association is kept with the department of otolaryngology where electronystagmography, posturography, and rotating chair tests are performed. A monthly conference is held to discuss cases with representatives from neurology, otolaryngology, neuro-ophthamology, and physical therapy.
  • Neuro-oncology Clinic
A multidisciplinary approach is taken to coordinate care in patients who have primary and secondary nervous system tumors. Members of the departments of neurology, neurosurgery, radiation oncology, neuroradiology, and medicine regularly meet to discuss cases and coordinate therapy.
  • Headache Clinic
Dr. Sylvia Lucas specializes in consultations regarding headache treatments.
