Rehabilitation Neuropsychology

Specialty Services

Neuropsychology services are appropriate for patients aged 16 years or older. Each person receives a thorough evaluation that includes an assessment of:

  • General intellectual functioning
  • Language and construction skills
  • Attention
  • Memory
  • Concept formation, reasoning, and executive skills
  • Emotional status
  • Psychosocial/everyday functioning

A neuropsychological examination includes a review of the patient's medical records and past history, interviews of the patient and his or her family, comprehensive neuropsychological testing, preparation of a report, and communication about the results to the referral source, the patient and family, and the treatment team. This process takes anywhere from 2 to 14 hours, depending on the referral questions, the complexity of the case, how quickly the patient is able to complete the testing, and the extent of feedback to be provided to various sources.

Follow-up
After conducting the evaluation, we provide feedback to the patient's referral source as well as to the patient and his or her family. When appropriate, we also meet with other rehabilitation professionals and provide them with test results and practical recommendations.

For patients receiving care through one of the UW's comprehensive rehabilitation programs, the results of neuropsychological assessment can be easily integrated into the overall rehabilitation plan, and we can coordinate assessment and treatment services from related disciplines such as speech-language pathology, occupational therapy, physical therapy, psychotherapy, vocational rehabilitation counseling, recreation therapy, social work, and rehabilitation nursing.
