Functional limitations brought about by injury, illness, or birth defects can have complex and long-term consequences. Sometimes even the simple activities of daily living must be learned in new ways as part of restoring productive living.
The Department of Rehabilitation Medicine focuses on maximizing abilities so that patients can live full, satisfying lives and manage their disabilities in the most effective ways.
Our multidisciplinary team, including physicians, nurses, social workers, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech pathologists, rehabilitation (vocational) counselors and other rehabilitation specialists, offer comprehensive inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation services as needed. We develop realistic and meaningful goals that relate to our patient's needs and desires.
UW Medical Center has on-site resources including occupational and physical therapy, speech pathology, rehabilitation (vocational) counseling, prosthetics and orthotics (experts in making braces and functional artificial limbs), drivers training and evaluation of driving ability, rehabilitation psychology, and psychometric testing.
