Rehabilitation counselors offer a range of rehabilitation counseling and consultation services to individuals with physical, cognitive, and behavioral disabilities. Among the medical conditions resulting in vocational impairment are head injury, amputation, spinal cord injury, orthopaedic impairment, industrial injuries, neurological impairment, chronic pain, musculo-skeletal disability, burns, cancer-related disability, and developmental disabilities.

The counseling staff considers each client a unique individual with a unique set of needs. Services are provided using an interdisciplinary team approach or are available separately for specific needs by direct referral.

Services Available

Our services are designed to address complex work- and education-related rehabilitation issues through evaluation, consultation, counseling, coordination, and advocacy. Specific services include:

  • Comprehensive vocational and educational assessment
  • Achievement, aptitude, and interest testing
  • Counseling for personal, social, educational, vocational, and independent living concerns
  • Vocational planning based on evaluation of physical capacities and job analysis
  • Pre-employment training, job search skills, and placement services
  • Coordinated return-to-work services, including job development and job placement
  • Client education and advocacy
  • Consultation with physicians, employers, school personnel, and vocational rehabilitation counselors
  • Referral and triage with vocational rehabilitation providers and related community agencies
  • Rehabilitation case management

Unique Features

Vocational rehabilitation services is located in a university medical center which allows referral to and coordination of a number of services including speech pathology, physiatry, occupational therapy, physical therapy, rehabilitation engineering, driver's evaluation and training, clinical and neuropsychology, prosthetics and orthotics, and other medical specialties. Specialized vocation-oriented clinics are offered, including the Assistive Technology Clinic, Adolescent Training Clinic, Brain Injury Rehabilitation Clinic, and Vocational Medicine Clinic.

Job Station Program

The Job Station Program is unique to the University of Washington. Clients participate in supervised work placements throughout the university system to build work tolerance and physical capacity, test work skills, and acquire recent experience. Placements vary from entry level and unskilled positions to professional and technical occupations. This approach not only reinforces work behaviors, attitudes, and confidence, but also offers an opportunity to network for transition into competitive placement.

Costs and Insurance

Our staff members can assist with questions regarding funding. Among the types of funding accepted are private insurance, Worker's Compensation (State Department of Labor and Industries), Division of Vocational Rehabilitation (State Department of Social and Health Services), and other third-party payors.
