Application Guidelines for Pilot Research Project Funds

Application Guidelines

The Harborview Anesthesiology Research Center (HARC) provides available department funds for pilot research projects. Below are the guidelines to be used in preparing a request for HARC funds and for the use of these funds when awarded.

1. Requests will be reviewed continuously throughout the year.

2. Requests should be submitted according to the sample format and should not exceed six pages, double-spaced, using a minimum of 10-point type. References are not included in this page limit and may be single-spaced. No appendix material will be allowed. A CV for each investigator should also be enclosed.

3. Requests will be judged competitively and HARC funds awarded based on the availability of funds. A major factor in assessing applications is the likelihood that HARC funding will lead to additional research funding.

4. A complete and well-written proposal is expected whether the faculty member is a beginning or experienced investigator. Incomplete and/or poorly written proposals will be returned. Junior faculty members are required to enlist the help of a senior faculty member (associate professor or professor) in preparing their proposal. An “easier grading scale” will be applied for beginning faculty.

5. When funds are awarded, they will be assigned an ending date (generally one year from the time of the award). Projects requiring additional time must submit a request for extension.

6. Funds awarded by HARC are to be used for the approved project only. If investigators wish to make a significant change in the direction of their research, a new or revised proposal should be submitted for review. At the end of the project unexpended funds will revert to HARC. In addition, investigators will be notified when projects register no budget activity for six months. If investigators do not plan to finish the project and do not plan to submit a new or revised proposal, unexpended funds will revert to HARC.
