Matching Funds

The Office of Research and Graduate Education administers limited matching funds for significant opportunities related to extramural funding submissions and for infrastructure development.

Evaluation criteria for requests for matching fund commitments include impact of the proposed work, institutional commitment requirements as defined by funding agency policy and support from benefitting departments and schools.

Additionally, the UW Office of Research administers the UW Provost’s Office resources for institutional support commitments under a separate set of criteria and policies.

Requesting School of Medicine Matching Funds

All matching fund requests require a written request, preferably from the department chair, to include the following:

  • Name of faculty member who will serve as principal investigator for the request
  • Specific purpose or purchase to be funded
  • Annual amounts and total amount requested
  • Estimated start date for the use of funds
  • Justification for the request, including faculty and departments participating in and benefitting from the request, and scope of impact
  • List of commitments made for this same purpose by other departments/schools and amounts committed (provide written documentation of each commitment)
  • If the request is in support of an extramural grant proposal, include:
    • Agency to which the proposal will be submitted
    • PI on the proposal
    • Administering unit for the proposal
    • Title and purpose of the proposal
    • Total amount requested in the proposal
    • Submission deadline
    • Anticipated start date, if funded

Requests for matching funds should be initiated well in advance of external agency deadlines to ensure adequate review time prior to grant submission internal deadlines for the Office of Sponsored Programs.

For approved department fiscal staff should contact the administrative services unit manager, Denise Barnes at barnem@u.washington.edu or 206.685.8710 to request assistance in establishing a budget for approved commitments.

For matching fund commitments linked to a grant proposal, written documentation of an award received at UW is required in order to receive funds. In some instances, periodic fiscal and/or scientific progress reports to the Office of Research and Graduate Education may be required as part of a matching fund commitment.
