In Memoriam: Dr. Ellsworth C. “Buster” Alvord, M.D.
Ellsworth C. “Buster” Alvord, Jr., M.D., retired head of neuropathology at UW Medicine and noted civic philanthropist, died on January 19, 2010, at his Seattle home following a stroke. In 1960, he began a distinguished career at UW Medicine, where he served for almost 50 years as a professor of pathology and pioneer in the field of neuropathology. Dr. Alvord was widely recognized for his research into the causes of allergic encephalomyelitis and multiple sclerosis, and he was respected and honored both for his scientific achievements and for his generosity. Dr. Alvord’s full obituary can be read at The Seattle Times, and a memorial celebration has been set for Thursday, March 4, at 2:00 p.m. at Meany Hall on the University of Washington campus.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that gifts be directed to the Harborview Mission of Caring Fund, a fund he and his wife, Nancy D. Alvord, created. It supports Harborview’s mission: serving patients from all walks of life, regardless of their ability to pay.
